The small "building" to which the people are headed to [probably] enter the store; does it say ESCALATOR or ELEVATOR or ???? BP

Poor angle for getting a true reading. I placed the pic in paint.net, cropped & enlarged it. The first letter looks like an "E" but certainly looks like it could be one of those two words. Speaking of escalator...our local Sears was the very first place I ever saw an escalator. At the time, we didn't own a car and didn't get to go to town very often. It was in the early 1950s and all six of us kids were only 8 years separating us from the oldest to youngest. I recall us kids riding up & down the escalator for fun 'til called down by Mother. Back then, lots of southern families didn't own cars, and bus service was common for rural areas. Our walk was about a half mile from the bus stop down a dead end road to our home. It seemed like five miles to us kids.

Yes, escalator. My 64 Daytona has been in/on that rooftop parking lot many times. The store is on Wisconsin Ave, NW in the Tenleytown neighborhood of DC, a very nice part of town. That particular Sears closed at least 20 years ago -- it was too small and the high property taxes made it uneconomical. I bought a lot of Craftsman tools there for 75% off during their closing sale. The building is still in use by several stores, but I don't know if the parking lot is still in use. There's a very good Mexican restaurant across the street.

I swear this was the same green '51 Merc that the pal of mine (who owns the 1951 Lincoln) and I searched for from Santa Monica to Lompoc, then back to Santa Monica.

He spotted it in Santa Monica, ran the plate thru a SMPD cop we both knew. It was registered in Lompoc, so we drove there only to discover that the owner had moved...to Santa Monica!

It is a shame they wreck it at the end.
