  • Body / Glass: Body to Frame pads /shims? Source & Thickness -57 G Hawk

    Hi,
Body is out for sandblasting! Was going to buy new “set” of the reinforced rubber shims to mount body to the frame.

Does anyone have a cheaper source for these? Or suggest the proper material to buy and a way to make the bolt hole? I was kind of shocked to see $7-12 per spacer in the SI catalog. Lacking “old tires” to cut up, and thinking “just rubber” stock from Amazon is too squishy perhaps(?), wondering what you’ve used. (And a tool to punch that hole?)

    THICKNESS?
Also, SI lists “Front”as 1/8”, while for “Rear” they don’t list a thickness. What would “Rear” be?

I salvaged most of mine, they range from 1/8” to 1/2” around the car. I have one at the ‘batwing’ that is 5/8”!!? …that one keeps the body from squishing the fuel lines, by the brake cylinder).

Does anyone know what these were originally to start with before years of compression? in my case, not many were as thin as 1/8”.
Yet I can’t believe the factory would have had more than a couple sizes, and every car went out the door with the same set? (Except maybe to shim for panel-gap fit?)
    Thanks!

(oh, undercarriage cleaned up pretty good with blowtorch and air-chisel; thanks for whoever gave me that suggestion several years ago)

I think you’re needing what they referred to as belting material typically used on old type machinery comes in several thicknesses. Possibly pick It up on eBay. Or if you live in a big town go down to the rubber supply company See if you can buy a few small pieces and then cut them up Get yourself a hole punch set From Harbor freight. In a wooden block And punch your holes out as needed Don’t waste your time on old tires Best of luck

Conveyer belt comes in many thicknesses, with lots of scraps after a splice or replacement. A rubber supply company as noted above, or look up a local conveyer belt company. They will have lots of small pieces.

How about the thickness question? Here’s my bag originals (some I know where they were, some fell off when lifting the body). But certainly very few 1/8” like SI’s listing. (Though I don’t know what their ‘rear’ thickness is)
        I’ve got from 1/16” to 5/8”….

Those of you who have done body-off, what thickness did you have and where? How much difference does it make? Both rear-mounts were only 1/16”. The Ray-Lin tutorial does talk about adding/subtracting shims there for panel-gap.

Maybe I should just re-use the decent ones, buy a couple new ones, and guess at where the missing ones were, and bolt it down.
