8369 The Cadillac ambulance would weigh more than double what the Stude weighs, so the Stude stood up reasonably well. I hope the ambulance crew still were able to provide any necessary First Aid. Those small red lights on the ambulance roof would be easy to miss seeing, and it may well have been (legally) going through a red traffic light.

I took the pic to another program so I could enlarge it and examine closer. The Stude is no lightweight. It is a Land Cruiser. Also, looking at the marks on the pavement, I think the Stude was on the street crossing from the right. Must be a fairly large city, because the street these two are sitting in is a three lane one way street. Given the quietness of a fairly new Land Cruiser, perhaps a radio playing, and difficulty seeing across three lanes of traffic...if the Land Cruiser had a green light, it is understandable how the driver might not have seen the ambulance in time to stop.

Notice a person sitting behind the passenger door of the Stude, and a gurney at the rear wheel of the ambulance. For all involved...a bad day indeed.

Growing up in the Daytona Beach area , I was lucky enough to be a part of some of the Car happenings . I worked at The Pure Oil Economy Runs for 2 years , either '65 and '66 , or '66 and '67 ( foggy memories ) , and was actually employed by NASCAR ,as part of the Officials team. I had 2 different jobs , one was attaching the 5th wheels to the car , and then putting the recorder in the back seat for various tests . The other was manning a station on the backstretch right at the entrance to turn 3 , which was a required Full Stop during the Economy runs .
They tested Acceleration , and Braking , as well as Mileage .
At other times I was used by the AMC team to help drive their the cars to Daytona from Jacksonville .
Sadly , I was never there during the years when Studebaker competed .
