  • Christophe (#7287); where I grew up (Stockholm) we had ALL kinds of car brands, even Russian Volga's & US cars was always around, even some Studebakers!
The Renaults was usually original but some were wild, & I mean WILD!!! ones... I was a kid so I didn't have a clue about what they did to them, exept I DO remember the Gordini & Alpine equipped engines when looking under the rear lid.
The coolest guys had 4cv's with wide wheels & stuff, there was even one blue metallic 4cv drag-racing, didn't impress much compared to 426 Hemi Dodge's & 454 Corvette's thou, but it was there & raced.
My 1:st car was a -61 Floride, gee that car made me realize what rust is...

R8's were popular for Ice Racing here back in the 1960's.

Incidently, A&M Motors in Edmonton became a Renault dealer once Studebaker stopped producing cars.

            • Studebakers in the 1961 Shell 4000 Rally: Actually it was called the Trans-Canada Rally in '61. Studebaker of Canada put on a factory supported effort in the rally of a number of years.

              • Studebakers in the 1962 Shell 4000 Rally

1962 Lark finished first overall against what was then the beginning of big time factory participation from many European manufacturers.

                • Studebakers in the 1963 Shell 4000 Rally: 1963 saw lots of competition from not only European teams but from U.S. manufacturers as well. First overall was a Chevy II. First Studebaker was in 27th place.

                  • 1964 Shell 4000 Rally: Like Studebaker itself, their presence was negligible. They did get Pedro Rodriguez a well know race car driver from Mexico, to drive. Unfortunately the Studebaker had engine problems. Stu Chapman (who was involved in the factory support for the Studebaker s in the rally) told me that the Rodriguez car had a modified engine. A standard engine was pulled out of another Studebaker and put in the rally car of Rodriquez.

1965 Shell 4000 Rally: The last of factory support for Studebaker.

1967 Shell 4000 Rally: The last time I found pictures, or a mention of, a Studebaker in the Shell 4000. Obviously a private entry, this GT Hawk did not finish the event. It looks cool though!

The only non rusting part on a Floride was the front nose which was filled with lead to achieve a correct finish. You could ruin one of these simply by using the factory jack at the wrong place. On a rusted body, this usually meant two halves of a car!

You are absolutely correct. That picture is the only 1964 picture of a Studebaker in the event. Unfortunately I messed up by putting some of the 1965 history under 1964. There are plenty pictures of Pedro under 1965. The info about him and his car are under 1964.
