Very cool picture, Joe. Obviously, the '41 was virtually new.

I figured that was a scrap rubber drive for WWII, so I blew up the picture and read as much of that banner across the wooden crates as I could.

What I could make out begins,

Our Fighting Men Need These, Won't You.... (Can't make out anything after that; perhaps someone else can.)

      Neat photo. BP

I am no more then a mile from said airport/tunnel as I type.
I believe it's from the North end of the tunnel looking South.
I say that because I see Imperial Hill in the backround.
There are no hills like that to the North of LAX.

                    • Look at the shadows on the street sign. It has to be from the South. That is North American Aviation to the right. If the sky was clear you can see those hills around Culver City.

I hadn't noticed the shadow before. Now that I do- I'd say this picture was taken in the middle of Summer.
The hills around Culver City would be where LAX sits!!!
Think about it- when driving north on Sepulveda fron LAX- you drop into the 'valley' that CC is in.
The hills in this pic are Imperial Hill and Palos Verdes. (front to rear)
They aren't big enough to be the Hollywood Hills.

                            • Dave; There are a few things that are not around there anymore. The plane is getting ready to take off toward the Ocean, there was a town called Surfridge that is no longer there. Eminent Domain. That pic. was taken 10 years before I went to school there at L.A. Trade Tech. Aircraft Anex. In 62 I worked for Garrett Airesearch, on the corner of Century and Sepulveda till Cliff Garrett died. Then everyone that had not worked there since before 48 got furloughed. Then on to North American. They changed the name to LAX in 68 but just extended the runways and built the new Bradley Terminal on the West side of Sepulveda.
