An early 53. I tried to enlarge to see if it was a Commander or Champion but just couldn't enlarge it enough.

The more you enlarge that Early '53 Photo, the more it resembles a Starliner Hardtop, could be either, but still can't tell if it has an "S" or 8 above the "Y".

The Studebaker restaurant in the Upper Peninsula closed several years ago, I don't know if the car is gone. Unfortunately the food quality left several years before the place shut down.

      • Hey Nox, how do you like that Desoto picture. And now for the Studebaker content......do you need an extra fully inspected & tested 1955 Desoto 291 'hemi' block (shipping may be a complication / but I can crate - deliver to local Green Bay Wis. trucking hub @ NO CHARGE )
You are the ONLY guy I know who is into Desoto's........oh yah the Studebaker content.......here it is, I was sold IT as a 63-64 Studebaker full flow block !!
By a well respected Studebaker vendor .
I have $ 750 dollars in a wrong manufacture engine that I can't use (and the spouse IS FULLY aware of the mess as she was with me when WE drove through the woods in South Bend after the big show to load it into her Saturn Vue for transportation back to Green Bay.
So what did I learn from this event?
When you buy a grease / grime used part bring a can or two of carb-brake spray cleaner and check-check and did I say MORE than double check what YOU are buying
This is why there is the old saying "buyer beware" ---caveat emptor (how's my rusty latin Mr. Vines ).
I can't believe at my age and history that I could have pulled this bone headed purchase (also I have a 1957 Chrysler Imperial 392 hemi so I sure KNOW what a hemi looks like ! )
This IS all my fault, the vendor honestly thought he sold me a 289 full flow.
So I just went back to college for a refresher course in level 101 Check it out Stupid, and the tuition was ONLY $ 750, a great bargain in today's college cost's.
        Is everyone laughing now?

        • Here's a video from today's Old Motor. It's about Ohio's chain of Big Bear Food Markets, but there are several different parking lot scenes in which you'll see Studebakers:

          • Watching the video, talking about the long time employees that worked for 20 or 30 years lost their pensions, reminds me about Studebaker and the retirement lost. Also, I remember S&H green stamps, and Gold Bond stamps as well as Blue chip stamps. We would look at the catalogs just like the Montgomery Wards Christmas Catalogs and dream about the gifts we could get for our birthdays and Christmas.

Replace and new are not always what they have been touted for improvement

Indeed, Bob; you couldn't watch that video without thinking of Studebaker employees and the -ahem- "unfortunate" pension resolution.

RE: Trading stamps. I had a job working in a Top Value Stamp redemption center in Lafayette IN during my senior year at Purdue. An interesting part-time job. The store is long gone...along with Top Value "yellow" stamps. BP

              • I was never into DeSoto Firestopper (thou they're nice!), I rather go for Chrysler (had some )or Imperial(had one), or maby a 53-54 "241 babyHemi" Dodge like those two + the wagon in the picture.
& nope, don't need another engine, I need money much more...

                • Yup, I am right there with you on the $$ need, as a matter of fact the need of $ 750 comes to mind.

                        • From the Sunday, May 8 Old Motor...'way on the back row, where you'd expect to see a '56 (or '57) Studebaker sedan in the early 1960s. ....Well, at least it's two-tone. (You may have to scroll sideways...):
