They appear to be scale models to me, or a photo of a painting. Look at how thick and uneven the door window frame is on the Studebaker!

The roof area over the rear windows on the Stude aint right, nor is the stainless gravel shield. Must have started with a photo, though. They got the shadow of the bullet nose right.

Whatever it is, it isn't a simple photograph of two production automobiles somewhere on a beach or waterfront, as it would appear at first glance. BP

In light of the comments so far, anyone care to speculate on the die cast manufacturer, accuracy & quality? What's with the tailpipe on the Studebaker's exhaust?

I remember years ago, reading about the origins of the 1949 Ford in Special Interest Autos (the article I think was written by Michael Lamm).

The original design had vertical tail lamps, FoMoCo changed to them to horizontal, adding the 'speed line' on the quarter panel.

So when was this diorama done and for what purpose was the Studebaker there?

HOXXOH, I think what your are referring to as "ghosted" is really a change in the focus between the foreground and the background as a result of depth of field which is a result of the aperture setting of the camera. The lower the aperture setting (larger opening) the greater focus differentiation. The higher the aperture setting (smaller opening) the less focus differentiation (higher depth of field). I would attribute what we see here to a fast shutter speed and low aperture setting and these are likely models set MUCH closer to the camera than the background. This is a common trick used by folks who photograph realistic dioramas. Very common in the model railroad world.

I can also see the ghost lettering. I can make out www.pa on the Ford, and com.br on the Stude. I can't make out the missing letters in between.

We take enormous sheets of clear plastic like that for granted today, but weren't they kind of rare in the 1940s?

I'm surprised to see a sheet as large as the one on the car in this photo. (I'm not questioning the authenticity of the ad; I know it's real; just the curiosity of such a large sheet of clear plastic.
