The NHRA Nationals in '59 were held in Detroit, I was there. This (your photo) may have been a regional race that year? I know Great Bend had the first Nationals but that was in 1955. I still have the program for that event.

    • Thanks for identifying the Studebaker. I sent the photo to Don Garlits' Museum, but never heard back. I knew it was a Studie. I was 8 years.
Here is a photo of a 1954 Starlight, Dad bought for my Brother in 1963. My Brother said it needed more power, so Dad traded it in for a 1955 Speedster. Quite a nice car for a Junior in high school. My Brother had 2 of nicest styled cars ever produced. He drives a V70R Volvo today.

        • How did I get my new 1972 Kawasaki Mach III and my 62 Daytona to Fort Campbell, KY? By towing the Bike using its front wheel in a Yoke my Dad built. We added a Trailer Hitch.
I was home on Leave from Vietnam and had been buying NOS parts sending them to the Farm.
I had just installed new fenders and front apron from Newman/Altman, fender $15 each and front apron $12.50. My Dad and I rebuilt the motor with NOS Crankshaft, Pistons, rings, bearings, Gasket set; all less than $200. I already had an Isky ST-5 Cam kit and a Carter AFB 625 4bbl I bought before joining SDC.
Back in 1969 in Central Farm Country, I never heard of SDC. I was living in Hutchinson, KS going to Jr. college when this idiot was traveling wrong way on a one-way road. It was Wayne Castor in an Avanti. He lived in Wichita and was traveling around looking for Studebaker owners to start a local chapter. Then I found Jim White in Hutchinson and became good friends. Those were the DAYS!!

                          • Note the SDC on the license plate. This car was in a '70s Special Interest Autos article, but can't remember the owners name right now. The mesh on the side grilles that match the radiator grille mesh is a dead giveaway.

                            • Amazing work! Looks like Willys Aero tail lamps were grafted to the Studebaker Starlight coupe. Not sure, though but it sure is nice looking.

I took this picture 2 days ago while in Greenwich Village. Double clicking it on my Mac rotates the picture to the correct orientation. I don't know why it uploaded this way.
