  • Frame / Springs: Leaf spring clips

    Hi folks,

I'm trying to find leaf spring clips similar to those on my 1953 coupe:

It doesn't look like this style is readily available. The closest I've found appear to be for springs that have a divot in them:

I guess, if nothing else, you can grind the button off the clip and use them?? Unless you're trying to keep the car all original??

That's my plan -- I just thought I'd check here first to see if anyone was sitting on top of a truckload of NOS suspension parts! :-)

Unless you have a steel band strapping tool, replicating the OE look is almost impossible and the purchase of the banding, clips and tool is easily more than just having a local spring shop rebuild yours, they already have the tools, strap and clips.

And the rubber that goes in them too. That is the hardest part to find.

What karterfred88 and Alan said. I had the same delimar with my 59. I was able to get all the metal banding from work and a tool to do it and I was able to reuse the rubber. I did not, however, go this route. As I was not keeping the whole car original there was no need to keep this style of clamping device for the rear springs. I added an extra leaf and used some more modern clamps from the local spring manufactures.

Thanks folks! I'll check some local spring shops. For the rubber, I was thinking of trying to repurpose something like this:

It doesn't look like they're long enough, but I've got a question in to the seller.

They are right for 2 1/2" springs, but the CASO in me says they are a little pricey.

                  Leaf Spring Clamp Rubber

I used these on a 56 Power Hawk and they worked great Check EBAY search (Leaf Spring Clamp Rubber Liner Set used on Ford Edsel) cost $15 S/H included and enough for a car and a half (6) rubber pieces. You will need to leave the stainless band on your springs and scrape or pull out the old hard rubber pieces. Good Luck
