Hello members, I have another tech question. My 1963 Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk has a Mallory ignition system. My question: are the ignition wires specific for electronic ignition?

Usually they require resistor style (carbon core). Since the carbon core style work with regular or modified, just buy a good set of modern wires of your choice and stay away from the old solid core style, besides your radio will like it.Originally posted by mch View Post -

I would stay away from carbon core wires. Their resistance varies all over the place. Use any good MAG CORE/ spiral wound wire.Bez Auto Alchemy

The Taylor Made wires are good, as are many others. Even the carbon wires aren't "that" bad in general, for a normal car. If you are running some sort of hot rod...no, spend a few more bucks.

It depends on what ignition system you have. The instructions from Mallory should have what wires are needed, or acceptable. My Mallory is a capacitive discharge and requires spiral wound wires and special coil. Yours maybe different and could use carbon core but if you need the information on your system try this link and look up your part number for the instructions.
You will need your part number.
Since Holley acquired MSD, who acquired Mr Gasket, it's harder to chase down the instructions. I will also include a link to a 6852M ignition box so you can see what I mean about the spiral wound wires. http://documents.msdperformance.com/6852m.pdf
This smaller ignition box can use spiral wound or carbon core wires. http://documents.msdperformance.com/29026a.pdf and if you read the list of coils not to be used you can see what I mean about matching the wires and coil to the system.

Probably a matter of word choice, all resistance style wires are carbon coated fabric whether wound, spiraled or looped. I guess my old time description of them as carbon core may not be accurate-carbon impregnated cloth, polyester or whatever is more accurate. Solid copper Packard 440 is usually not recommended.Comment

I returned a set I got from Advance Auto as I didn't want to assembly the parts and cut to fit. So, thanks for the lead for the Taylor 64652. I saw caps on both ends to speed up the replacement of ignition wires that may be the problem I am experiencing.

64V-K7, thanks again. I received the wires today; nice blue color too, and installed. The quality is great and the factory molded connectors were perfect. thanks so much, great recommendation. The timing will still be checked on Tuesday as the idle is still not great.

For the idle quality, I'd do a valve adjustment and check for vacuum leaks especially any rubber hoses and their connections, surprising how a small vacuum leak can roughen the idle. If it's been sitting awhile take it out and run it moderately hard first, blows off any carbon that may causing slight misfires.Originally posted by mch View PostComment

I did take my 64 Avanti R2 out today for a fast and long highway run as I was meeting up with the Staten Island N.Y. Hello Studebaker brothers , I've just purchased a pertronix flame thrower III for my 289 Champ. It says not to use solid core plug wires because it will interfere with electronics. Well mine has the condenser on the coil so it doesn't mess with the stock radio. No other electronics on vehicle.Will it mess up the flame thrower module ? Plug wires just recently purchased and hard to find. Would also like to increase spark plug gap as suggested with 12v output coil. Just don't want to damage the module. Anyone else done this ?
