  • Frame / Springs: Better Avanti Frame dimensions-Anybody have??

I guess this would best be answered by Avanti experts who have worked on them for collision repairs. The only frame references I have, are the repair manual and the same diagram on Bob's site. Does there exist one with more detail, such as diagonal measurements, various heights at the front and back kick up areas, more detail on distances to the centerline at various points where the rails bend in and out? There appears to have been frame repairs on my 63 Avanti, and some things don't look "just right" especially on the front cross member lower, at the control arm bolt hole area and the left frame rail at the steering box. Looks to me that some pulls were made (evidenced by torn holes in the bottom plates) and some additional welding done to "put/push back" the bottom plate into contact with the rail where it separated, either during the impact or the pull. These welds are far from expertly done and before I bother to fix them, and start the bottom to top body repairs for refinishing, it would be nice to have something to use as a guide to see how far off everything is, make it right before I spend hundreds of hours restoring everything else. Anyone have one??

Have you tried to find any crash sheets? I think that some of the frame pulling equipment manufacturers may have their own spec sheets, something to look for. Being authentic is one thing, but how about just replacing the frame? just a thought... Lou Cote

I don't have any early Motors Crash stuff anymore, just a 66 Mustang--hoping some one else might. Everyone has converted to computer based dimensions, of course none of them go back to 1963. I guess you haven't seen the price of frames lately, then there's the serial number switch problem for registration. If I have the dimensions I can decide to fix it-or give it a used car quicky paint job and dump it.

If this works right, I've attached the labor portion of the Mitchell Collision guide from the 1960's. BUT, it gives you a labor time to replace the frame, not frame specs.

          Avanti (1963-1964).pdf (188.1 KB)

I might have more stuff if certain guides have info on Avanti II. Just heading to bed. I'll check the library tomorrow...

Thanks Tom, although it doesn't show what I need, it is nice to have, better than the parts book, for me at least. I don't remember when the crash books started putting frame and later unibody diagrams and dimensions in them. Worked with Motors, Mitchell and later ADP-Audatex, computer based systems but can't remember which had them and when. I know most frame shops and body shops had a better reference to work with than what is in the repair manual. Maybe I need to check with companies like Chief or Blackhawk, they might have been proprietary at the time.

I was aware of that, however the price, and lack of dimensions available, to install it (them) properly, wouldn't help much in finding out if the "X" member is twisted or racked leading to yet other problems. Then there is the problem and cost of shipping 16 foot long stampings from MI to DE. If I find the damage is beyond "fixable" by normal collision repair techniques I will probably have to find a way to get them, or clip the frame with an aftermarket stub. Looking back, I probably should have spent much more time and effort in examining this car before purchase, but now that it's mine I need to get it to the point where I'm happy with it--at least.

Do you know anyone who will let go of prints? All the shop owners I knew, in the Sacramento, CA area, well enough to ask for a copy, have Chief and Car-O-Liner racks and measuring systems-and no reference to the Avanti of any year.

Fred, right now on Ebay there is a frame dimension sheet for '62-'65 Larks. These are the same as the Avanti and should work. It's all of $11.99.

Although I had hoped for a more detailed one, I ordered one since I'm not having any luck finding a better one, also found the Lark convertible/Avanti chart from the same seller and ordered it as well.
