Mufflers "that will really sound good" is a pretty subjective and personal thing. I like my hot rods quieter than some...but then I'm an old guy .

Here is the Kart Hauler with generic turbo mufflers. Every shop sells them. 259, 2 twos, dual exhaust other wise stock.

Get a couple glass packs. Soak them in drain oil for a couple days to let the fiberglass absorb the oil. Now put them in a 55 gallon drum with a bunch of burnable material and set it on fire and let burn for several hours. After cooling, install. Now, go wake up the neighbors. That's the way we did it in the 60's.

I run Porter Mufflers on my '65 Cruiser. I like the sound. They are not particularly quiet in fact some call them loud, but then my Cruiser is not a normal four door sedan either. For prices and the sound check it out here: http://portermufflers.com/

Hi Pete, this question is right up my alley, as I've already put new mufflers on my Stude. Not the same engine of course, but the ones I had installed sound great. I also had them installed on a previous car, a 66 Mustang with a 289 V8, and it sounded amazing and unique. The company is... http://classicchambered.com/classic/products.html

I also have a youtube video of the mufflers on my car, if you're interested... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kelm756LNUc

IMHO I like the deep tone of the Porters in their sound clip, but with a different engine they might not sound the same. The Classic Chambered Exhaust sounds coarse to my ear. Of course, the sound quality of the video clip gets involved too. The only way to know for sure is listen to a similar car in person and that is usually not possible with our Studebakers.

Preferred engine sound is ALWAYS subjective. Imho, no one can tell you what you will be satisfied with based on what they like. For example, at one point I tried four different pairs of mufflers on my Avanti when first rebuilt years ago. Someone liked them all, including grotesque FlowMasters (my opinion), but I liked none of them... all being too loud under some driving conditions. That said, my all time faves of any car or any engine, was the 3 foot long no-name glasspacks on my R2 SuperHawk without cross-over pipe, a music unlike any others I'd heard before or since.

Sometimes, I think, you just have to commence trying some and see what you like best. The other option is to have others record different exhausts and send you the sound files. Remember auto versus stick cars can sound pretty different under different circumstances. And, get sound files under different conditions, idle, deceleration in gear, etc. Best of luck!

Most of these mufflers will be nice only at a certain rpm. Other times it will drone and be totally un-acceptable.
You may also need resonators, and a crossover pipe to get that smooth burble at all rpm ranges.
