  • Engine: V-8 Water Manifold Question Avanti VS Hawk

I have a L. Stone repop aluminum water manifold that I have bolted on three different blocks and on all three it seems to be 1/4" too long. On the blower motor I just switched to a stock iron one and everything lined up. Is there a difference on any V8 water manifolds on overall length? Avanti vs Hawk / Lark?

The reason that repops never fit correctly is that the mold is usually made using an original part.
Hot aluminum is poured in the mold and when it cools down it will shrink and be shorter than the originals.
Avanti water manifold are different than the Lark and Hawk.
R! and R2 Avanti water manifolds are the same but on the Hawk and Larks the R2 water manifold is different from R1 and standard later V8's.

Need a pic. of it to see where it is off. I repaired a lot of them for Stone over the years, mostly for machine goof ups. Cutters slipping. Operator errors.

Alan Why couldn't the water pump mount be built out of steel or aluminum with pipes and flanges where it meets the block. Top half would be a easy build but bottom with pump mount so much. What would be nice is to have and electric water pump and all the room a guy would need for electric fan.

Where it appears different is how far out from the block it goes horizontally frontwards, it is too long. Is there a difference in the length on "ANY" of the V8 manifolds from front to rear, Hawk / Lark, Avanti be it R series or not? That is the question.

all it takes is time and money. I had one dabbed up out of stainless steel for my supercharged Packard V8

JK, I need dimensions. Put it on a flat surface, measure from the surface where it mounts to the block, to the water pump mounting surface. Oh! and I have used a Chev. electric pump. Just made new tubes to mount it to the block and a couple of plates like the ones on the back of the heads where the temp sensor goes on the front with -12 AN fittings. Then into a -20 to the upper radiator hose.

It is 1/4" longer than any iron one I have. I can take it off and measure it but I don't see the point. So far no one has answered the question, "Is there any difference in length in any of the original Studebaker V8 water manifolds regardless of year or performance venue?" That is all I am asking. If there is no difference then all I need to do is make this one work. If there is a difference then I need to figure out what I have, it is that simple.

                  I have one also.
I did a close check of the water holes, make sure that they matched properly, never did check the length.

One of two things, machine the housing, shim the lower pulley...or a combination of both.

I have five iron manifolds, they "appear" to be the same depth. I did a check a while back when I had the top outlet machined for a receiver groove for a thermostat. Come to think about it, I had the aluminum (L.S.) one done also. the guy who did the machining didn't say that he had to reset anything to machine that one. But I understand the thermostat location has nothing to do with the pump location...
If my shoulder didn't hurt so much. I'd go out and check mine.

Yes, the Avanti water manifold is longer than a Lark/Hawk manifold.

#3 Avanti on the left, Hawk on the right. You can see the length difference.

                        Alan,

It is not possible to see the difference in length from post #3 but if the one on the right is the Hawk version I am good as that is what I have. So it is just a mater of making it fit. It will be no problem as I am using an ATI balancer and I need to make things fit with adapters as required. But I still do not know the difference between the two dimensionally.

Will get you some dimensions this week end.

Set up my gran net block and digital height gauge. Used 1 each of Stones aluminum water manifolds and a couple of stock iron types. Hawk type, from the water pump seating surface on the manifold to the passenger side block inlet surface was 3.5625".
From the wpss to the head on the pass. side was 4.660". Drivers side 3.800"
The Avanti was 5.125" a difference of 1.5625". More than your 1/4" Need any other measurements or pics. just ask.
