  • Engine: 1940 Commander Engine removal??

Hey guys, is it possible to remove the flathead 6 motor with out taking out the trans with the motor? Ive got it stripped down pretty good, getting ready to hook the crane up and undo the bell housing bolts....looking at the top ones it seems a little tight to even get a wrench between the bell housing and firewall. Any info, tips, recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

The shop manual is your best friend here. If there is enough room at the front (how far is the oil pan from the crossmember?) to get the engine off the gearbox and lift it from the car, you can gain a little access to the rear bolts by removing the front motor mounts and let the engine go down (slowly without harming anything). Isn't there an access through the firewall? Anyway, if the gearbox has always been in the car, you'd better remove it to get all the sludge out of it. It's also easier to reinstall the engine and the gearbox together than separately.
    Best of luck.

Of course my Champion is different but I can remove the transmission from the bell housing easily without moving the motor much at all. 4 bolts and it is off. Then pull the engine and bell housing together. Just make sure the motor is well supported. A helper is a good idea too. The transmission is heavy enough to be awkward.

I have a shop manual but doesn't go into much detail about engine removal. Thanks I think I will take your advice an take the motor and trans out together.

It is pretty easy. I was surprised how fast it went. And how bad my motor mounts were! Just be careful if you put the engine on a stand. A lot of the engine stands are really designed for V8 blocks and are not stable with the long and very heavy Commander 6.
