  • Exhaust: Heat riser valve cover

I'm looking for the heat riser valve cover or plate for a 1952 170 flathead 6 cylinder engine. I believe the part number for the plate is 515832. There was one on eBay that ended yesterday but I didn't know I needed it until today. Does anyone have one they would sell or does someone make a plate to cover the hole in the manifold and bypass the heat riser valve? I've seen discussions before on this and it seems that these valves are very problematic. And of course one of the bolts broke off(the bottom one) so I will have to drill that out. Thanks much. To remove broken bolts I've had 100% luck using the welded washer and nut trick. I use my wire feed welder to weld a flat washer to the broken stud, the weld a large nut to the washer by welding into the center of the nut. Let it cool and unscrew the bolt. If the welded washer and nut snaps off just give it another try using another washer and nut. Most times it works on the first try, but I've had to repeat the process a coutple times.

The first time I've seen the heat valve removed and a plate over the opening was just this past week while I was in South Bend at the swap meet. I've always used a penetrating oil and tapped on the weight or shaft to get stuck valves loose. Once they are loose I haven't had any problems with them resticking. It would probably be a good idea to squirt oil on them when they set unused for the 6 months of winter and road salt.
