  • 43 divided by 13 equals 3.307692307 or 3:31. It should be the number of teeth on the ring and pinion.

    • Is the Dana 27 really that wimpy? Especially behind an automatic to cushion it?

      • I'm not positive but I don't think Studebaker used much else besides the Dana model 44 rear ends in their 289 equipped passenger cars. Yours does look like one. I believe there should be a number cast into the housing for whatever it is, 23, 27, 44. I can't see it in your pictures but it's probably covered with grease and grime. If you clean it of a little with a good stiff brush you'll probably find it. Good luck!

        I plan to sell the differential after I swap the Ford 8 inch rear end into the Silver Hawk so it would help if I knew what I had??

          I'm building this car for my daughter. She plans to go off to college in one year and drive this car everywhere she goes. If something goes wrong with the "original" rear end she wouldn't be able to pull into and Firestone or other auto repair station to get the Stude rear end repaired. She would have to park the car until the correct parts could be found. When I took the car for inspection the mechanics couldn't even figure out how to open the hood for God's sake!!! The Ford 8 inch Mustang rear end can be repaired by anyone and parts are readily available at the local auto parts. Also, because the car now has a 4 speed OD trans it really needs the 3.80 gears to get a better running car at all speeds. I wouldn't waste my money getting new gears for a rear end that is difficult to get repaired with parts that must be found and ordered (down time). I know lots of members like the original rear ends with their tapered bearing and hard to find parts but I'm building a car that can be easily and cheaply repaired by any mechanic anywhere in the US.
          So to answer your question....the original rear end may be strong enough to handle the new 350 engine but it won't serve the long term plans for my daughter.


          I'll post pics of the casting numbers later today.............

              • I finally got around to installing the radiator support to hood seal. If you'll notice in the send pic, there's an air gap at the bottom of the radiator. This gap developed after I moved the radiator more towards the rear of the car. I'll need to fill this gap to keep air pressure from escaping as I go down the road. There's also a gap at the top of the radiator which will need to be filled (pis later). These gaps might be one of the reasons that the temperature rose when I got the AC working. There are smaller gaps on either side of the radiator which I will also address:

                Lastly, here are pics of the completed vent closure I made. I bought some one inch wide rubber seal material and I'll install the seal on all mating surfaces then install the new vent closure on the car:

                • My wife had a small wagon when she went to college oh so many years ago, as mentioned her dad was a Studebaker nut. Anyway she lived in Orange county cal. which is So Cal and she went to school in Canada and drove up and back twice a year with no issues other than rule pump failures. She got so she could install them on the road as she carried one and tools. Her dad ended up installing an electric and never ever had another issue.

                          I'm not up on Stude stuff either so when you say, "there it is", what does that mean. Good, Bad, mediocre ?? I'm replacing the "23" with a modified heavy duty Ford 8 inch rear end. I'm doing this swap to make the car more dependable and faster/easier/cheaper to repair by any mechanic. Is the "23" the bottom of the line (lowest on the totem pole) or is it a heavy duty rear end??

                            • You can see the name on the front of it. Looks like Artic Kar or are you talking about the actual model number??? The car came with AC from the factory and I imagine the dealer installed the evaporator???:

                              • The model 23 is the lowest end. My 59 Lark with an automatic and 259 originally came equipped with a model 23 and was munched by 28K miles. I then installed a Dana model 27 and proceeded to munch 3 more before finally ending up at a Dana 44. Mind you, I was 16 at the time and my right foot was WAY too big, even with a 259 and a 2 barrel. Power braking was a lot of fun back then when you could buy parts cars for $50........

                                Go with your Ford 9" or a Dana 44. You'll be a LOT happier. The 23's and 27's aren't much good except for a 6 cylinder in my opinion.
