  • Engine: Oil pump gasket

I know I've read something about this somewhere, but the search button didn't help.
What is your opinion about the gasket between the oil pan and block on a V-8 engine. I have torn apart many Stude engines and some have the gasket, some don't. Both surfaces are machined, so does it really need a gasket? The Fel-Pro gasket sets do not come with an oil pump to block gasket. your thoughts are appreciated.

I would use a gasket. Even a machined surface would be hard to contain 45 pounds of oil pressure.

It is the Oil Pump to Rear Main Bearing Cap Gasket that you DO need. The Factory and the Dealers used them, why not?

Some newer V8 sets do not include the:

Oil Filler Pipe or block-off Plate Gasket

Full Flow Oil Filter Adapter Gasket

Oil Pan Breather Tube Gasket for Jet Thrust & Avanti Engines (when needed)

2 Brl. WCFB, or AFB Carb. Gasket

      Oil Pump Gasket

Rear Main Bearing Cap small side Gaskets

Correct Thin Shim Head Gaskets for all '57 to '64 V8's.

I include all that are needed for the Application.

As long as the two surfaces are flat, clean and dry when assembled, I don't see it as a problem either way.
Of ALL of the engines I've put to gether over the years with the oil pump bolted to the rear main cap, Stude is the only one past 1955 that required a gasket.
