  • Engine: A 1951 tech quiz! Requiring scrutiny and obscure knowledge

I just posted this picture to an inquiry about an asbestos insulator around the fuel line and didn't think about the issues that are clearly visible and should have point deductions in a critical judging situation.

Besides the red heater hoses that should be black, the blue butt connector in the wire to the heater motor and the duct tape where the vacuum hose passes through the firewall, there is one tiny detail that is clearly visible but probably only detectable by those very familiar with the 1951 V8 engine.

Just a "WAG": I don't think windshield washer solution was blue back then.

I'll give you points, Kerry if that is true but, not what I'm looking for. Not quite as obvious.

Is that a worm drive clamp on the hose at the forward corner of the battery? What would that hose be for?

          Fuel line hose?

Yes, that is fuel line to pump. But concentrate more on the engine itself. There are very few things that differentiate a '51 from any other Stude V8.

I am not that familiar with the 51 engine. Somebody guess it. The suspense is killing me.

The color of the oil fill cap? I haven't looked at my 52 Land Cruiser in many years, but I'm sure it was a different color.

An even more obscure and off the wall clue that may point the direction. I know, I'm really stretching here. Just part of my personal lunacy.

                          TEX GOT IT !
In 1951 the V8 engine number was on the passenger rear corner of the block. Later V8's were stamped on the "BOSS" in the driver's front corner. This engine in a '51 Commander is actually a '53 Commander engine
                          .
Didn't take you long, Tex! You're good!
