  • Engine: Removing Camshaft

Hi, I recently finished removing all pistons finally. I now have to remove the camshaft. The engine is a six cylinder 170. What is the easiest way to remove this camshaft as well as the oil pump gear that is fitted to the camshaft.

I don't know about the easiest way I know only one way. The timing gear cover has to come off. The fan pulley has be pulled off firstly. With the pulley and cover off remove the two bolts holding the cam shaft thrust plate to the block. Before extracting the cam shaft the valves and springs have to be removed along with the oil pump firstly, then invert the engine to lower the tappets so they won't interfere with the cam shaft removal and then extract the cam shaft by pulling it straight out. There should be no need to remove the cam gear. If the tappets are to be removed they are removed from the bottom while the engine is inverted they can be easily removed. Hope this helps Dave

Keep your Valve Lifters in ORDER, in case they will be going back in without a Cam Re-Grind or Lifter re-surfacing.
It is best to drill 12 holes 3/4's of the way through a piece of 2 X 4 marked "Front" on the end and keep them stored in a dry place lightly Oiled.
