  • Cool/Heat: Stant thermostat number for 1550844 housing

Building a 1961 Hawk 289 with the aluminum thermostat housing number 1550844. I ordered a stant 13478 but the diameter is too large to fit in the recessed groove in the housing. Does anyone know the correct Stant thermostat number? I found a Stant number 13358 that will fit but they say it is for the early style?

    Thanks

I don't know who you buy your parts from but they are completely messed up. The larger O.D. stat such as Stant 13478 was used on '51 - '60 Studebaker V-8s. The Stant 13358 is used on '61 - '64 engines, which I would have to say is later rather than earlier.
You should be able to walk into any auto parts store in the country and buy the stat you need. If they can't figure that out, then go elsewhere. (Yes, '65 - '66 Studebakers used the same stat, so they are commonly available.)

A friend of mine walked into an auto parts store one time to get a tail light bulb for his Citroen sedan. They told him they did not have one and, further, no such bulb existed.

I looked at the bulb. It was an 1157 - the most common automotive lamp on the planet at that time.

I never ask the people in the store to figure it out. I figure it out first, then go to the store and tell them what I need.

Bringing the housing, AKA gooseneck into the store should allow/assist you to get the right thermostat.

You are right I gave up on my part stores along time ago. This is what summit racing said but I know they will make it right. Thank you for reassuring me on the part number I thought was right.

          I used one from O'Reilly's, a Murray Fail-Safe thermostat # 7200-180

In Summit Racings defense the Stant catalog gives very confusing information. Click image for larger version

As usual Summit has taken care of it.

Mike that is SOooo screwed up it's not even funny!
All '61 and up ('66) Stude. and Chev. V8 Engines take the same Thermostat and Gasket.

So where is the '51 to '60 Type Stat and Gasket, and what do the diamond footnotes do for you?

Really, THIS is from the actual Mfg. (Stant) of the darned things?
