  • Exhaust: Flathead six exhaust header

Can anyone direct me to a source for an exhaust header for my '51 Champion flathead six? I have an intake manifold but I need an exhaust so I can finish my engine. I've tried to reach Bill Cathcart but get no answer at the number I have. Can someone give me a phone number or email address for him that they know is current and good. Thanks.

Bill Cathcart retired and sold his holdings. No one else has come forward yet to take his place....

Other than a flange, which I think are available, shouldn't be to dificult to build a tube header for the ol flathead. Even a good muffler shop could swing this build me thinks.

Here's a picture of an intake manifold I made many moons ago for a flathead. This was part of a turbo project. As you can see, its not too difficult to fabricate something like this. It would be just as easy to do an exhaust header. If you want it to look extra nice, use some mandrel bent tubes directly off the flange. A collector can be purchased from most header suppliers or just cut one off an old Chevy header.

          Dstude,

I should have a couple laying around, I have 2 50 champions, a 51 and a 52 I have been using for parts. If you need jast a factory exhaust I will look around to see what I can find.

Hi Jim, thanks for your offer but what I'm looking for is a vintage hot rod style header, preferably a cast iron one with two outlets for dual exhausts--I've seen them in photos online, so I know they exist. I've got a nice finned aluminum head and dual carb intake and I need a good header with no exhaust heat to finish the set. I want to make the engine look like an early 50s hot rod piece. If you hear of anything like that, or even a steel tubing header for a Champion engine, please let me know.--Don

Is it an aftermarket style iron exhaust manifold with no heat to the carburetor and for a Champion engine? I need one like that to go with a finned aluminum head and dual carb intake for that 50s hot rod look. A tubular steel header would be alright too, but cast iron, especially with two outlets for dual exhausts would be my first choice. I've only seen them in photos online. Can you help? I'm in Merced, central California. My email is dg.nsd@sbcglobal.net Let me know if you've got anything like that. Thanks.--Don

So you prefer the modified cast iron manifolds like these.

                  Instead of these.

I wish I could talk to someone who had successfully modified some cast manifolds. I have been thinking of giving it a try even though I currently don't have a Champion to use them on. I wondered if there was enough demand to give it a try.

Alan, Are you serious??? Do you own this car? That is awesome. I recently sold a J6 Panther Kellison. It broke my heart to sell it, but I was moving and simply could not take it with me.

Sal; That car was built by Vergil Rice, who in his last years was near you in Mountain View and Nevada City. Here is a pic. of him in the car.

There was a write up about the car when I drove it at the Gordon Williams Memorial Drags. April 10, 1976, in the Avanti News Letter No. 31, Summer 1976 Page 8.
