  • Exhaust: 289 headers

I am sure it has been asked and answered but I can't find a thread anywhere so here it goes...

Will Ford 289 headers fit a Studebaker 289?

I bought a pair for my 67 Mustang but ended up going a different direction. I can always sell these headers but if they fit my Stude then it could add a cool factor to my truck! Maybe:-/ thoughts?

Ford 289s have four exhaust ports whereas a Stude 289 has three.

There are NO common parts between a Ford and Stude. 289, not even close.
A Stude. is more similar to an Olds or Cadillac than any other, but still few if any minor parts will interchange.

Plan on buying all your parts from Studebaker Vendors.

Common mistake...just because they're both 289 cubic inches doesn't mean they're the same engine. Studebaker had their 289 long before Ford had one. As already said, the ONLY commonality between the two is the displacement.

Just like Rambler had a 327 doesn't mean they used Chevy engines. It's a common thought that the Ford 289 is the same as the Studebaker but Stude had theirs 7+ years before Ford. Perhaps the only thing that may fit both would be the distributor gasket, maybe.

Thanks everyone... Makes me feel kind of silly once you explain the difference:-)

No worries though... I will probably just have a set built.

Has anyone had any luck with exhaust systems; flow master, borla, dynomax, etc?

I have a '64 Daytona R2 (289) with stock cast iron manifolds. I went to a local.exhaust shop and had them build me a new dual exhaust system with a "H" crossover pipe, and knock-off brand flowmaster style mufflers. Makes good power and sounds awesome. Two inch pipe, by the way. Was a little hard to squeeze past the power steering, but we got it done. Price locally (Seattle area) was around $550 for the whole job.
