  • Cool/Heat: AC effects on engine temps ??

What causes the increased temps ? I'm wondering about all the discussion on 6-bladed fans, clutch fans, etc......Maybe I'm lucky but, why is it that I have had 2 63' V8 Cruisers that have had AC installed and no temps above 180 degrees ? Both engines were opened for block cleaning and new freeze plugs, 170 stats, thick radiators (recored) and ...but both have had stock 4-blade fans and regular water pumps.....?

Look at where you are located. If you were located here in Texas, or anywhere where the ambient summer temperature is around 100 degrees, day in and day out, you will find your engine temperature around 200 degrees. Mine actually runs 210 with the AC on. Have done the block, but have not pulled the engine, and had it baked.

There is a big difference in cooling a 1963 Cruiser and cooling a 1963 Avanti - look at the air intake, underhood space, etc.

My car {63 Hawk} runs 180 degrees on average without the AC on in south east Alabama. With air on at a stop light not out of the ordinary to climb to 205. 2 row radiator, thermostatic fan clutch and stock fan. Jack, your 1 car runs cool cause you bought the unit from me. cheers jimmijim

To answer your question, the main reason a car with AC will run hotter is caused by the condenser being located in front of the radiator. It reduces the amount of air and raises the temp of the air that reaches the radiator. A 6 blade fan, a larger capacity radiator, etc help to offset the negative effects.

Makes sense to me and by that very same reasoning is why never to install a transmission cooler in front of a radiator. It will create a viscious cycle if you are in tow mode. Hot tranny fluid will induce heat onto the radiator which will cause the water/anti freeze mix to allow the engine to run hotter and if tranny has radiatior cooling lines will only serve to warm the trans fluid and then the trans flud makes the engine run hotter still. result-- overheating engine and cooked transmission. Been there done that. 82 Toronado towing a 3000 lb Chris Craft. I initially towed many times without a trans cooler with no problem. We had planned an outing that was 100's of miles from home and I wanted to do everything right. Bought the Tranny cooler and installed per manufacturers instructions{in front of the radiator} After the over heating situation I uninstalled the cooler and continued on without incident. Arrived at destination and had both oil and tranny fluid/filter changed as they did get hotter-n-heck. Tranny lasted 4 month after the incident. I could tell it was damaged once the trailer was unhooked and fluid changed and test ridden. Moral l: locate a trans cooler anywhere but in front of your rad. cheers jimmijim
