  • Body / Glass: Bubbles on Avanti body

I wonder if anyone is familiar with how to solve this problem. Years ago I stripped our Avanti with aircraft stripper, removing three layers of paint. The car was then finished in Avanti Maroon lacquer.
Shortly after completion I got a bubble on the hood and ended up replacing the hood. Many years later the car developed more bubbles when sitting out in the sun.

I want to redo the body again and obviously want to be sure I have a permanent fix for this bubbling issue. Is anyone familiar with the problem and know how to make a permanent fix?
    Thanks.

It sounds like at some point the car had a silicone wax on it or was waxed too soon after it was painted. There are agents in the paint that require time to work to the surface and evaporate before the paint should be waxed or a sealant applied. That traps the gas from the chemical agents in and can cause bubbles. Silicones get into the fiberglass and take a looong time to work their way out...maybe never. That causes bubbles as well.

It sounds like the sun caused those chemicals to try and rise to the surface and evaporate. That's why paint shops use ovens...to cure the paint before it gets to the customer.

As far as using aircraft stripper, it may cause the same thing. Maybe the body didn't cure long enough before paint was applied.

If you actually used laquer,it is more susceptable to problems than modern paints.
