  • Engine: How much torque before front pully bolt snaps off in crank?

I've been soaking the cylinders in the V-8 for a few days now and still no signs of budging.
Been using an 18" breaker bar on the front pully bolt every day. Just wondering when I get to add retapping the crank to the list of things to do on the Golden Hawk (with auto trans.)? Or is it ok to get the pipe out?

Before breaking off that crankshaft bolt, I'd rather try prying on the starter ring gear from under the car. More leverage and easier to repair (by replacing the ring gear) if you bust some teeth off.

Hopefully, before you bust anything, you'll be able to keep soaking it long enough to free it.

What solvent are you using? BP

And you haven't , I would relax the rockers , so that stuck valves etc are not
      adding to the resistance..

I'm using PB blaster, which has worked for me on too many fasteners to mention and more than one seized engine. I've also heard Marvel's Mystery oil is effective. I may go grab some of that tonight.
Thanks for your suggestion about the ring gear. I haven't crawled under the car yet, but I'm guessing a starter removal is required. She ran fine in '69, so I'm not sure why it's stuck already...

What are you trying to do...?

Get it to turn to try to start it...? In reading your initial post...it sounds like it's just plain ol time for a rebuild..!
You can backyard it all you want, it sounds like even IF it did start, it wouldn't last very long, nor run very well while it lasted.

          Just my nickles worth..

Good point Shifter4, I will back off the rockers and maybe even give the valves a good rubber mallet whacking while I'm at it.

Just trying to figure out what I'm getting into. It's definitely going to be rebuilt (looking for a rebuilder in the St. Louis area with experience with Studebaker 289's). I would like the satisfaction of seeing it spin after all these years. Still working on brakes, electrics, carb, supercharger, cleaning, etc. I made a promise to some fellows that I would take them for a ride...

It can be done but it took an idiot (me) with an impact wrench. If you want to try the breaker bar remove the crank bolt first and make sure it is clean and lubricated so you can get the broken end out easier. I would let the engine soak a good long time first though.
