  • Engine: Is it possible to put an r4 intake on a259.

I've been wondering if an R4 intake would work on a 259 thought it would be a nice addition to the lark. Please respond.

It is possible but the runners are much larger for an R-3 & 4 so it may end up being worse than a standard 4 bbl manifold. (ports wont match up ) Another thing to think of is the car would be overcarburated bigtime, unless you were able to find 2 4bbl carbs that were around 250cfm each.
    59 Lark wagon, now V-8, H.D. auto!
    60 Lark convertible V-8 auto
    61 Champ 1/2 ton 4 speed
    62 Champ 3/4 ton 5 speed o/drive
    62 Champ 3/4 ton auto
    62 Daytona convertible V-8 4 speed & 62 Cruiser, auto.
    63 G.T. Hawk R-2,4 speed
    63 Avanti (2) R-1 auto
    64 Zip Van
    66 Daytona Sport Sedan(327)V-8 4 speed
    66 Cruiser V-8 auto

99.99% of all Stude V8's can't really use all a dual 4bbl has to offer....especially the smaller displacement 259.
Now, if you get a Linoel Stone clone of the R4 intake (T-bolt had some a while back), it will bolt to a stock (non R3/4 Stude head).
Then, you could disconnect the secondaries, and run it on the primaries......
But it won't run like a good single 4bbl would run....

          Crazy -

Why do you want a "large..." four barrel carburetor..?

Unless you have a big roller cam, a LOT of head work, and ready to turn a LOT of RPM....it will run like garbage....unless no more than 600cfm is "large"..!
As with 99% of all 259/289 Stude engines...a 450 to 500cfm carb is "more" thAn enough.

Do the math or find a carb. size calculator...not rocket science.

Because he's a very enthusiastic 12 year old, and he's having way too much fun with his very own '60 Lark hardtop.

Josh, keep it simple (and cheap) and get an Edelbrock. Dual fours are overrated.

By the way... I have you a couple of things lined up for you in South Bend... How does a ride in an R3 powered Avanti with Halibrands sound?

Josh, C'mon up and help me clean up and polish some stuff, and I'll help you with your 4bbl intake...

It's alright to dream Josh. Early in my teens, I put two fours on a 55 chev. with a stock 265. It ran worse than it did with the two barrel, "BUT", I was a hit at the local Dairy Queen when I raised the hood. Learnin' is part of growing up. Sometimes we learn things from others mistakes, and then we learn the "Hard Way". A engine (not motor) is somewhat like the human body. The fuel/intake system is like the mouth. The heads and valve train is like the digestive system. And the exhaust system is kinda like the ...... well you get the idea. The engines performance depends on a balance. What's taken in has to be digested, and has to go out the exhaust. All three have to be balanced for best performance. I have built many engines in the last 54 years, and every once in a while, I have hit "spot on" on this balance. Other times not exactly. LOL
