  • Body / Glass: Trunk Lid on left side ,is it a bad hinge?

The trunk lid on my 55 president on the left side is up alittle more than say the right side. Is it a bad hinge or are the springs shot on that side. I 've seen worse cars in pictures ,and was wondering if I should fix this sooner rather than later. Thankyou

You'd better fix it NOW, before it binds up completely and causes you to bend the deck lid upon lowering some time.

First examine the deck lid to be sure it is straight and not already bent. If it is, then you need more than hinge repair, of course.

If it is not, remove the hinges (do both sides so they stay balanced) and send them to Fairborn Studebaker to be rebuilt. BP

Bob, does Fairborn do 50 Champ Starlight Coupe hinges as well? my left hinge has been bad since I bought the car in 1976, its probably time to fix it.

I simply don't know for sure, but AFAI do know, they do. Just call 'em. BP

I had the same problem, only my trunk lid was up about an inch at the left front corner. I found a new hinge and installed it. The old one had a lot of slop in the pins. This helped a lot, but still not right. The following post was what it took to get the trunk lid to fit correctly.

          Hope this will help you.

Is this for a coupe or sedan. If it's a sedan I have a cheap pair of NOS ones.
