  • Distributor rewire

While we have the distributor out we notices the internal wires are bare in places and thought we would replace them. Any suggestions or words of wisdom?

While you have the dist out, check the advance plate, and vaccuum advance. I just had my Prestolite come apart. Prestolites do not have bushings on the advance plate. Also, check your play on the dist shaft.

If you have a GOOD parts store nearby, they should be able to give you pre-made replacements with the correct terminals and "limp" fine-strand wire. If you have to make your own, I've found old multimeter leads to work well.

      good luck

I really like the super flexible wire at:
        http://www.robotmarketplace.com/prod...cessories.html .

I've seen improvised ground straps between the the two halves of the breaker plate, that immobilized the advance mechanism. I recommend running the ground through the distributor housing to a screw on the advance can. Keep the leads to the movable breaker plate long and flexable.

No luck at the auto parts. I'm sure I can find suitable wire. The terminals appear to be copper. Are they? Must I use copper replacements?

not sure, but regular sta-kons of the correct size/shape will be fine, those wires aren't subject to particularly high voltages or amperages. Just make sure, as someone else said, that the wire is flexible enough to not interfere with the movement of the breaker plate. What model distributor do you have? I bet rockauto sells 'em as well in case you just don't feel like rolling your own or don't have any questionable multimeter leads laying around.

It's a Delco-Remy in our 53 Commander. I've got another auto parts to try that's a little better on connectors. I may have some flag connectors that will work. I also think I can find some wire. I was mainly wondering if there was some trick or some special resistance wire used or something.

Napa has the lead and ground wires you need. Get them to look them up in the catalog. Its been a while since I bought one, I think the # ECH LW40 will work. If your wire goes through the bottom of the dist? You have to slice the rubber grommet of the OE one and reuse it.

I just looked it up and they do not list anything for a '53 commander but for a '56 Sky Hawk they list a ECH LW42 for the ground wire and ECH LW60 for the primary, I believe the Delco dists. are all fairly similar over that year range. Best of course would be to pull the whole dist, or that wire, and take it in to the store with you when you go to pick it up so you can verify that it's right.

                  good luck
