Water pump trivia....During the time Onan was under the studebaker umbrella, they were developing a new 4cyl diesel engine for industrial use. Rather than designing a new water pump, they "borrowed" the champ pump. The hub height is different for their application. My company was still providing them to Onan for service 3 years ago (not sure now).

I can provide you with a new American made pump for the cost of an SI rebuild and a rebuild (by superior) for a little less. Drop me a line if interested. Bo
Where were you over the weekend? I ordered a new one yesterday morning from SI but it's not starting out too well. It's advertised on their web site at $78 but they said it's now $85 and they wouldn't sell it for their advertised price. Then they called me back because their clerk misspelled the name of my street. Then they called me back again to give me the total cost because they couldn't figure out the shipping cost while I was on the phone. That's not the best way to impress a new customer....

When we were selling these, our cost was 18; we sold them to Sasco for 36; & they retailed them for 78. How things change.....

          Mike,
Was $18 off a core or with a new casting and everything? If so that is impressive!

I am pretty sure things will improve when Ed gets back to town. Just before the South Bend move and since that started, there has been quite a bit of turnover of order takers, so it has not been running as smooth as normal, just be patient that WILL change! [^]

Airtex never sold rebuilt pumps. All of our pumps were new manufacture. We used to get the raw castings from Warsaw Castings in indiana (before the job was moved to mexico) & we machined them & also made the hubs in house on a screw machine. The seal came from John Crane in Chicago(before it also was moved to mexico) & the bearing was purchased from FAG or made in house.

              Ahhh, the good ole days....

More trivia....we obsoleted the V8 pump in 1972 & scrapped the pattern equipment. I happened upon the mahogany master for the pump body & squirreled it home to save it from the dumpster.

Things are looking up. The water pump arrived today and I just ordered it yesterday. Also, on the box in two different places it says "Made in USA" which is also good news. I took the Stude for a spin today and it was chattering away so I'm looking forward to getting the new pump installed later this week....

The guy that was supposed to help me never called me back so I decided to do it on my own. Everything was going pretty smoothly until I got the old pump off and removed the piece from it that the heater hose fits on. The hole on the new pump was a lot bigger than the hole on the old pump. I took a spin over to my local hardware store and he had the adapter piece so I got the new one on without any further problems. It's a lot quieter now so I'm ready for a summer of cruises and car shows....
