Motor Oil

Just came back from a few FLAPS, and all I could get was part synthetic, part regular motor oil. They called it "blended motor oil".

Can this be used with what I have in the car.? I was told that all the oil companies are going this way. I did buy some of that ZDDP stuff while in York.

Bill - I think this issue has received quite a bit of attention and discussion in previous posts, so I won't say too much. I use the synthetic Castrol 20W50 motor oil (link below) for classic cars in my Transtar, but there are many other choices to obtain the required level of ZDDP needed for flat tappet engines. NAPA and many other FLAPS carry this product.

I have just recently been through the same thing you have. I have found that the Valvoline ZR1 Racing oils are appropriate for our engines. Specifically, if you are using a straight 30W, the Valvoline product #223 is ready to go off the shelf. The ZR1 Racing oils have the zinc additive and will not require you to become a chemist in order to change your oil. Bob Palma has done a great deal of research on this and could further enlighten all of us. Some may be tired of discussing this, but I can hardly think of any subject more important.

I'm beginning to think that BobPalma should write a short, concise statement on motor oils and Mr. Bob Shaw should add it as a locked sticky to this forum. Yeah, that's what I think.

Yeah, BobG, I would like an alphabetical listing of "off shelf" oils with sufficient zinc additive. That way we could have a choice by brand. Also, keep it updated with any changes. Problem is, who has the industry connections, knowledge, and energy to keep it current. Also, we would have to indemnify the author from liability issues.

We can't really make this a sticky (nor would I advocate it) because the situation changes monthly.

Most SDCers just what to know what they can buy at their FLAPS (or mass merchandiser when hauled along for shopping with the female unit) that will be OK so they don't have to add ZDDP at extra cost. We ran "the latest" as of a couple months ago in The Co-Operator, and will continue dong so from time to time as warranted.

I have a lot of bottles of ZDDP, that was not my concern.

I was informed that all the oil companies will be going to this "synthetic blend". I was also told that this oil contains BOTH conventional oil and synthetic.

I was concerned about MIXING them. ZDDP is not the issue. I also remember folks saying that "synthetic" can find holes to drip from that conventional can't. I am lead to believe that due to my living in a large metro area that they are "converting" us before the rest of the country. All I wanted to know was could these two be mixed, I did not want to be chastised for not keeping notes. I might have been out of class the day this lesson was taught. Also present for the first time since I bought my first Studebaker was TYPE A transmission fluid. Container said that it will mix WITH all transmission fluids and can be used safely in all FORD GM and Chrysler engines and most Japanese cars. Did not need any so I passed the display by.

While I have yet to see a program written for this situation, it can be done. When I was using a, um, third party chat program for Yahoo, there was this neat little feature installed for using in the room. A word list was provided that a user could add in words that blocked posts from another user if they had these particular words in the posts. Ironically enough, there was also a user block list so if the antagonist really got out of hand the user could block them and there posts for all eternity. Generally I kept it to block the X rated spam posts, but with a few simple words, I could block other words as well. I'm sure there is a related filter on this forum for the X-rated stuff, so quite conceivably, it can be done.

STP antiwear additive contains "ZDDP", and is labeled as such. Use a sufficient amount of 30-weight oil of your favorite brand, and top it off with a half-pint(well 15 oz, actually) bottle of STP. WaLMart sells it for $2.77. S'what I will do, until there is a suitable alternative.

I think people should not be disparaged from posting whatever they want to post about as long as the post is car oriented or the proper forum is used. When a member is well versed on a subject and just plain doesn't want to be subjected to questions and answers at the whim of an uninformed person, he should just skip the post.It would be better for all if we weren't subjected to whining. There are really no dumb questions. Some folks need answers and don't consider doing a search. At least they came to the right place to ask a question. Some like to volunteer info. Some have updated info that needs to be shared. If your brain can not possibly retain new information, faint chance of that cause you infer to know a lot. I know, you just don't appreciate repetive posts or answers to the like. Don't read 'em. Some don't see all the posts that go on here for whatever reason. They are not intentionally trying to seem uninformed and/or posting needlessley. I enjoy reading most all posts. Some people are a better read than others. Some seem to post relentlessly. Having something pertinent or informative to say should be a consideration. I read on another forum a persons impression of this forum "seems to be a contest as to how many posts a person can rack up" as in contest. jimmijim
