  • Cool/Heat: Avanti heater/heater core

    Hi everyone,
‘I’m working on getting my ‘63 Avanti rolling again. When I bought it in the summer, it was missing lots of bits and pieces including the under-dash heater core and assembly. In the desire to have a working defroster among other things, can anyone tell me if there are equivalent pieces out there or even a generic bolt in system? Thanks for your time and expertise,
    Tim

Jon Myer in Ohio and Stephen Allen in Florida would be good sources for those parts.

IIRC, some time back, someone on the forum had found a heater core for another vehicle that will fit an Avanti. I just did a search but couldn't find it. Someone on this forum may know.

What you describe is exactly what I experienced with my Avanti about 20 years ago, yep, I needed a new heater core. there is no drain on the core or in the box. As to replacement, I took my car to a old time (now OOB) radiator shop that also would do heater cores. The owner had done several Corvettes and will willing to have a go with the Avanti. He followed the shop manual, but in reality he just used common sense and when about it is a very methodical fashion. In the end from start to finish I think it took him about 5 hours, and he stopped for lunch. The core was obtained from Jon Myer who has copper cores made for him by a vendor he had dealt with for many years. Remember to use new heater hoses.

Here is a post about that from 2024 :

That rogue replacement was from a Plymouth Reliant 1986 vintage... Supposedly any of the K-Car Series (Dodge Aries) was workable...

Here's another thread using a 1973-91 Chevy C-10 Blazer heater core.. Very similar to original..

Thanks for your advice, I’m busy checking the possible substitutes for the core right now!

Is anyone having trouble getting to that last URL posted?... It seems to revert to the AOAI version when I test the link...

Thanks. It works now. The photos make me wonder if this heater core can also be made to fit in the ‘61 - ‘66 Lark types and/or the ‘63 - ‘64 Hawks?
              Working...
