  • Body / Glass: vent window install problem

An entire vent window for 57 hawk was missing. Was able to purchase one and installed new weatherstripping. Now installing the window frame I can get the bottom of the vent glass seated and close the latch but there is about 3/4 of an inch open gap at the top between the glass and weatherseal. Trying to push the top in there is a lot of pressure and I broke the piece that holds the top pin and allows the vent glass to pviot open and close. I replaced the broken piece ( had to remove and reinstall the glass) and there still is a 3/4 gap at the top.

I wondering now if I need to remove the glass again from the frame and gently bend the top portion of the frame enough to close the gap. and if I do bend the frame will the glass fit? Anyone have a similar problem and suggestion of what is creating the gap and or a remedy?

I assume this is on a K-body Hawk.....is that correct?

Posting some pictures would make it easier for dunces like me to understand what is going on.

Ensure that the glass is correct for that model cut a cardboard template that fits then compare it to your glass.

I did just that, cardboard template and had new glass cut. The issue is with or without the glass in the frame that the glass is inserted to, the frame does not fit into the metal frame to which the wetherseal is attached. Though the bottom of that frame seats into the frame with weatherstrip and will allow the latch to secure it closed, the top has the gap. In the pictures one shows the bottom seated and the large gap at the very top.

You may want to try and compare to the opposite door and look at the top pivot pins. Maybe something is twisted or a mismatched parts.

I’m no professional. Recently put new rubber in for a gentleman building a hot rod For his wing window The rubber supplied was a bear to get into the track of the frame And once everything was in place and the appropriate rivets and washers, holding the rubber at the bottom in place The window would not close against the rubber Out of the car Once it was installed in the car frame of the door The whole thing was more rigid, with a little bit of silicone grease or whatever slick stuff you want to use I was able to shut the wing window. But things still weren’t right very tough to close and I wasn’t about to start carving on the rubber I recommended to the owner of the car he’ll have to take the razor blade and start trim things up to make it close a little easier. Just my experience with the wing windows

Did you heat the seal first? If you have a warm sun, set it out in the sun and let it warm up. Or, you can use a heat gun or a hair dryer to warm it up. I have done it to several seals that were stubborn to fit.

All good suggestions..I did do some trimming of the seal and applied grease that helped a little. Will try heating.
