    I have a V8 engine block # P94294.. What I can find is it is a 1963 Hawk/Lark 63V engine. I am having trouble getting the proper parts. Do I have this ID wrong? Dist. # 371, Head # 155750 and in a 63 Avanti with 2 #'s 63R 0759and 63RT619
Can anyone ID this for me. Horsepower, year and model it came from etc...

Your body tag should be 63RQ xxxx. Serial number is likely 63RI619 (1619). Studebaker used roman numeral I for the number 1.

All Studebaker 289s are essentially the same. The only Avanti differences will be pistons, timing gear, water manifold, water pump fuel pump, carburetor, cam, valve springs, exhaust valves etc.

Cylinder head casting number is 1557570 for all 63,64 V8 engines. With standard 289 pistons and 4bbl carb, the engine is rated at 225 hp. If the engine has Avanti pistons and cam, the rating is 240 hp.

Guess there are more Avanti specific parts than I thought. In any case, you are correct. The engine is 289 from Hawk or Lark.

The previous owner could have replaced some or all of the non-Avanti parts with the correct Avanti parts.

The Major difference between the Standard 289 that this block started out as, and whatever Avanti Parts may or may not have been added is the Compression, it was 8.25-8.50 to one, IF it has Jet Thrust or Avanti Pistons, it could be 10.25 to 1 which is what gives you the 240 H.P.

Are the Pistons Dished or Flat tops ?
