  • Speedo / Tach / Gauges: Tach issue

I have a 1960 289 Hawk that when I bought it had been converted to electronic ignition. The ignition works great but the tach has never worked.what are my options?

What electronics do you have? My 56 PowerHawk 259/289 was converted to Chrysler elect ignition by the previous owner, and I have the original Stude Tach and it works just fine. If you don't get any answers, I can try to trace my wires to see what goes where.

There are lots of types of "electronic ignition". If Rafe's wiring diagram doesn't help, and the tach is known good, you may need one of these...

Hmm, that is an interesting product. Never seen or even heard of that. But great to know they exist. I might need one of those myself here before too long. But 1st I need to get my motor rebuilt so can get there.

Thanks for that Link Dick, I did not know that Co. made a "Fix"/Conversion for the old school Sun Tach Senders like I have in the '54 converted to 12 Volt.

Other Batt. removal conversion Kits are more difficult to install.

Has anyone on here tried the "tachmatch", current sensing version , on a GT Hawk tach?

          See also his Match Meter

"MeterMatch is used to allow analog gauges (such as fuel, temperature and oil-pressure) to use senders that were not originally designed for that gauge, and provides for an alarm indicator if normal readings are exceeded."

Pre-62 (so 61 and earlier) Stude tachometers did not use that type of sending unit. They had Delco distributors, and a pulse drive adaptor under the distributor cap. A Sun sending unit or any electronic sender will be useless.
