  • Cool/Heat: Radiator repair/replace

    Gotta small leak at the upper passenger corner of my radiator of my 59 SilverHawk V8. It’s where the upper cap and fins meet. Just an annoyance now but really want to repair it for peace of mind. Certainly I could take it to a repair shop (very few exist now) but wonder if anyone has any advice on external repairs. JB Weld? Don’t want to even consider putting any of that stop leak crap in my coolant system. Also are there any known replacement radiators that can be easily converted to work on my Hawk? Like another vehicle application that I can easily get and install? I have already done some modifications and upgrades so not real concerned about originality over functionality.

    I faced the same issue with my 57. Drained and pulled it, and that's when I found that 9 tubes had been "pinched off" and sealed. I had 3 others starting to weep, so I found a radiator shop - not an easy thing to do - and I'm having it re-cored. I want to keep it as original as I can, and it's costing about the same price as a replacement.

    But, if you can get to the leak, and carefully cut some of the fins back to expose the tube, JB Weld works wonders......

      If it is an OEM two-row radiator, I'd use that as an excuse to have it recored to a three-row. If it's already a three-row, I'd probably still have a pro look at it and go from there. I am a firm believer in insuring the radiator is plenty adequate, even over engineered is OK with me.

          I repaired my roommates radiator in college. I used a gas stove, acid core solder, a wire brush, paste , and a large copper. Took about 10 minutes! ( You must drain the coolant to a level well below the leak.)
