    Well. I'm a happy camper. Everything works as it should and I took Paul's advice about shifting the column sleeve up to close the gap. Thank you everyone!

      A little late now, but, is your directional handle "loose"? I find they loosen up and require tightening and maybe a helper sealant for good measure.

        Boys, I happen to be working on this very same item on my 64 convertible. I am replacing the brass plate and wire with a new one. My question is how to properly reinstall the turn signal cancel ring coil. (Had a lot of fun taking it off and watching it fly across the room.) I can't seem to find a procedure for it in the shop manual anywhere. I don't want to beat on it because I'm afraid I will crack the steering wheel. Perhaps I should heat it with a torch and hope that it expands enough to fit over the cone and then wait until it cools to tap it down the rest of the way? (I wouldn't want to push it in all the way lest it burn the nice fresh new insulator rubber.) Have any of you ever done this?
