  • Engine: Oil filler pipe

I'm still having problems with mounting my Fram canister oil filter on my 49 Champion six. I've finally assembled all the lines and parts, but the canister won't fit because the oil filler pipe gets in the way. From what I can see, if the pipe had a 25 degree bend towards the front of the engine as I've seen in pictures, the cansiter would have lots of room to be bolted up to the engine. Does anyone know of a pipe being sold either new or used so I can take the one out that's in the engine and put one in that has a bend? The only other way I can see would be to pull the pipe out of the block and heat it with a welding torch and wait for it to cool and tap it back in. Tony

Did you ever Read your other post here:

Does ANY of that information help you figure out why you are having the issues ?

So NOW, we are told this is a '49 Champion.
IF original those did have the Dipstick oil filler Cap I believe, and "should" have the appropriate angled Filler Pipe, unless there has been an Engine or Parts swap.

This '51 seems to have the angled Pipe you are looking for WITH a Filter.
That brings up another thought, Most Champions did have the F3 Fram Filter which is smaller diameter than the F4 used on Commanders.

Yeah, that one is totally a "Backyard" installation, there is plenty of room to use the proper mounting Bracket on the left..

What is "proper", they are all aftermarket installations, some dealerships, jobbers, owners or friends of owners. You could install an aftermarket oil filter any where you wanted, there is no industry standard.

I think you are forgetting that most were Factory/Dealer Option aftermarket installations, that looked professionally made and installed, not cobbled up.

Sure after you bought a car you can do Anything you like, but it will not allow future owners to fit Factory Parts like in this case Hoses or Lines etc. and it will Not look professional and be easier to work on.

I bought this engine 55 years ago and that is the way it was, the PO was not a mechanic of any form therefore the installation was done before he owned it, most likely at the local Studebaker dealership.

I think we are having a failure to communicate. I responded to your Private Message and sent you a link for one of the curved pipes on e-bay - $22!

Perhaps the site rejected it because of the link I posted - I'm not sure. So, I won't post it again. If it wasn't scratched off, you can find the link on my return Private Message. It is e-bay item number 273215168499. Copy that number here, then go to e-bay and paste that into the search bar and it will pop right up! As of 4:25 pm PDT Monday 4/21, it's still available!

And on another note, as easily as the pipe caps are to remove and replace, there's always a very good chance that if someone replaced your original engine with another one, they transplanted the cap from one to the other, or at some time installed the cap with the dipstick because it is easier to get to. My '51 Champion engine has an opening in the block (center, drivers' side just aft of the distributor) for a dipstick and it has the cap on the filler pipe with the dipstick as well. After 74 years, different configurations are very likely.

Got it. I have to agree that someone has done something at some point. I've heard of filters being mounted on the firewall and I've thought of mounting mine just outboard of the block on the driver side using the mount that comes with the filter by using thread stock in order to clear the distributor and other stuff.
