Last chance to get GOOD WIX/NAPA 1049 Oil Filters.

There is still some USA, Mann Hummel Mfg'd Filters left in NAPA Warehouses as the New NAPA filters for the most part have not yet arrived (from China ??)

As we learned in this String, Post # 4:

NAPA no longer sells WIX Oil Filters, so I asked my Local friend at NAPA, "does this mean that your NAPA Gold Filters will no longer be from WIX" ?

He said yes, but I have (2) old stock, Portland has 3, Seattle has 9, so I asked for the "Good Guy", friend, Jobber Price on 14 of the NAPA GOLD 1049 for late '62 to '64 full flow blocks (also mid '60's Olds, Cad. and Buick).

Here in Taxington (WA) they list at $30.20 and cost me $16.93 ea.

Thanks for the heads up. I only have one on the shelf so I ordered
3 more from NAPA. My store only stocks one at a time.

OK, school me. What's wrong with buying the WIX equivalent at another Flaps?

Nothing at all, except maybe the price, I believe the NAPA Gold by WIX was a bit lower, also convenient to get at a usually REAL Auto Parts Store with other High Quality Parts and real help..

I'm seeing Wix 51061R at O'Reilly for $16.99. Never bought one. Don't know if it fits.

        WRONG !
If you are looking for a Drop-In Cartridge for a Fram F4 Filter using a Fram C4 or C4P Element for a '47-'57, the cross ref. is WIX 51006

If you are looking for the Spin-On type replaceable Can, partial flow on TOP of the Engine '58-'early '62, Fram PB50, it is WIX 51050, NAPA FIL-1050

Full Flow Filters are noted in Post # 1, WIX 51049.
You MAY need to Order it !

UPDATE: Note: the 51061R is a Racing filter for Fast flow, it only Filters to 61 Microns.
The correct Filter filters to 21 Microns.

But the Gasket size is wrong so will not Fit, it is odd that it is a Specialty Use and SO Cheap.

Today, I bought five 1049 filters at one of our local NAPA stores. I did not get the impression that they were the last he had. Besides, there are three more NAPA stores locally, so it is unlikely that I bought the last ones available. I am surprised by how expensive they are. The price has more than doubled since the last time I bought some. Even with the veteran’s discount, I still paid $22.99 each. However, I am sure that I got “old stock” filters. The Mann Hummel name is printed in small print on each box.

One question: What will be the "use by" date if I buy several of these filters now? I assume that everything, including the filter media, can crumble to dust given enough time.

I have taken it as my mission in my retirement years to resurrect several Studebakers that have been dormant for some time, and will need a few filters.

            List: two 56Js, two 64 R1 Hawks, one '63 R1 Avanti, one '63 R2 Avanti, one '64 R1 Avanti, and two '64 R3 Avantis.

I have used them after 20 years with no problem, I would think 10 years would be good.
The element will survive, it is the Neoprene Gasket that will harden after 30 or 40 Years.

To reduce oxidation you could Seal-A-Meal encase them without Air or a CASO Ziplock bag, most air pushed out.

I just checked Rock Auto and they are showing the Wix 51049 filters at $6.59 each so the correct filters for full flow block Studebakers are readily available. Another place to check is Discount Fleet Supply. They are a Wix distributor, but I believe the filters are only available by the case from them. Bud

My favorite has always been Hastings (now Baldwin) available on Amazon (from remote independent FLAPS) about $13.

                  15-micron filtration-best in the biz.

B50 must be the partial flow Type for '58 to early 1962.
                    The Baldwin/Hastings full flow is a B9.

Yes B-9 is what I now use in my '64 Avanti, used to use Hastings LF-212, but now very hard/impossible to find.

There is no problem Bud (and others) with Availability, NAPA still has the 1049, but the New stock is from a new supplier NOT WIX, possibly Champion Laboratories.

The 6 New Stock I got and returned, were in plain Brown boxes with a NAPA Gold sticker and did say made in USA, just very slightly different than the ones from WIX.

The WIX 51049 Filters are a different story, still available everywhere, no change.
This is just about NAPA, and them Cancelling selling WIX and getting theirs from WIX.

If I remember correctly, NAPA stopped using Wix as their filter supplier 18+ months ago. Maybe NAPA headquarters had problems with the Wix supply chain or more likely another manufacturer made them a better deal. I agree with Andy R. both of my Studebakers have Baldwin filters on them right now and I've have been using them when I can get them for the past 45 years as they are a top quality USA made filter. I made my first comment because there were several comments about people buying every older stock Napa filter they could find while Wix filters are readily available from other suppliers at sometimes a better price. We also do not know if the quality of the new stock NAPA filters is as good as, better or worse than the Wix filters and until we do know, condemning the new NAPA filters as being somehow inferior to the Wix filters is at this point unfounded. I agree that's a good deal but I'm trying to stay away from Amazon.

The Only problem with Valvoline sales is it's always just the 20W50 on sale only for the middle of summer in Arizona, or a very loose, worn out engine.

If the filters are more than 5 yrs old you should dump them. I learned the hard way by purchasing two cases of PER-5 and tossed them in the garbage.
