Most all Studebaker V8s have a letter code prefix in the serial number.

If your 535801 has the letter "V" in front of it, the engine is a 259" from a '61 Lark.

That is likely a misread Casting Number 535601 which is RAISED, Not Stamped into the Block. all blocks from each Era are the same, with the Same Number.
That does Not tell you what is inside.
Look on the Top, Front, Corner on the Drivers side.

Is it a Packard engine? It is original to my Hawk.

Only if your Hawk is a '56 Golden Hawk.

No. The P prefix probably originally meant president, as it was originally used on 259 engines installed in 1955 President models. After 1955, it just meant a 289 engine.

If your "Hawk" is a 1962 Gran Turismo Hawk, the engine is correct for the Car, only the Studebaker National Museum Production Order Copy will tell if the car originally came with that EXACT Block Serial Number or not.

Since there is No moderator now it could take a while to fix.
