  • Clutch / Torque Converter: Clutch, Pressure Plate and Throw Out Bearing Replacement- 1955 E7 w/224 V8

My '55 E7 truck is in need of a new clutch, pressure plate and clutch release (throw out) bearing. I've spent quite a bit of time in the service manual, and it's not particularly clear as to "which is what" as there is nothing that substantiates the respective part numbers to the V8- only the truck series. From what I've been able to ascertain, the clutch plate is part number 683842, the pressure plate assembly is part number 683636, and the clutch release bearing and plate is part number 513143. As an FYI, the transmission is a B-W T86 with a B-W T10 overdrive unit.

    1) Would somebody substantiate these part numbers for me?
    2) If incorrect, would somebody please provide me the correct part numbers?
    3) Does anyone know of a mechanic in the greater Portland, Oregon area that they'd recommend to do the work? Few shops will work on these older vehicles anymore.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Greg,

The numbers you listed are correct. I will note that the 513143 Bearing & Collar assembly was superseded later by Studebaker to p/n 1550534. Normally the collar, which just presses into the bearing, can be reused; an auto parts store or a bearing supply can provide a new bearing based on the bearing number. RockAuto.com would also be a possibility for the bearing based on the bearing part number that will be stamped in it.

You might inquire as to whether there is a clutch rebuilder in your area that can rebuild your the pressure plate and disc. Or, if you find a shop that does work on older vehicles, they may have a rebuilder that they have had good service from. Make sure the flywheel is resurfaced as part of the clutch replacement.

    BTW, I have the exact same combo - an E7 with a 224 V8 and a T86 overdrive.

Fabulous, thank you Paul- appreciated. I did see that Studebaker International has the throw out bearing listed as part number 1550534, but Stephen Allen's has both, and lists 1550534 as '58-64. Either way, I'm comfortable with what you've shared- and LOVE that you have the same truck! They certainly are unique.

The clutch disc, pressure plate and throwout bearing are not unique to Studebaker. They're one of the most universal, used by all the major manufacturers in the '50s and '60s.

Jack, indeed when I need a clutch for my Avanti I just walk in and order one for a 409 Chevy with Borg&Beck

There may be several answers to the chatter problem. As far as I’m concerned, your suggestion to use the 409 clutch is the best answer by far. Why stick with a less than optimal technology. After shaving the bell housing a bit, which took a few minutes, the 409 clutch worked flawlessly. It’s a couple days later and it still does. It is very smooth. It never grinds when putting it into reverse. It’s simply a much better clutch.

Greg (radioadman1), just don't try this with your E7 '55 Truck, with a 224, it likely will not handle a H.D. stronger Avanti pressure plate well.
