  • Engine: Studebaker Valve Lifters

I have a NOS set of 1951 to 1954 valve lifters, part number 531696. The box they're in was at one time near moisture and most of the lifters have a light coating of rust in places. The rust will wire brush off easily but if you look closely with a magnifying glass, you can see a little pitting. Do you think these lifters would be still usable? Also, what is the difference between these lifters and 1955 to 1964 lifters, part number 1549247?

I've included a photo of before and after cleaning.

Those are Chilled Iron. Hard to find but if all you have is a Steel Billet cam from a 51-53 you need them.

The cleaned up lifter looks good, without having it in my hand and using my eyeball. A little pitting won't hurt anything, as long as it is not on the 'bottom' of the lifter, where it rides on the cam. those pits hold oil, which is a good thing.

Well to remember Studebaker had to replace most of the steel cams and chilled iron lifters because they failed early on.

These ARE 1951 to 1954 "232" V8 Engine Lifters, but I didn't think you could tell by looking if they are Iron or Steel replacements.
So I guess the clue is, the 531696 Studebaker Part Number.

You asked the differences between these 232” lifters and ‘55 and later 224”/259”/289” lifters. The diameter of the 232” lifters is larger than the later lifters.
