  • Engine: Removing freeze plugs

So I have this 289 that I plan to put in my 56. It came out of a running Hawk but I’ve had it for a couple years now. I’m planning on cleaning out the coolant passages so I was trying to remove the freeze plugs today. I read online that they can be tapped out with a punch. I tried that but nothing moved. I don’t want to damage anything. Is there another way to get these out without breaking the block?
Also is this square thing in the second picture the block drain, before I break that cranking on it?

Just drill à hole in the middle of the freeze plug to relieve the tension. A few punches should then get them out. I might be wrong but they should be of the cup type and it looks like they've been installed backwards. Yes, the plug looks like the drain plug.

Those square head Steel drain plugs can be replaced with Standard Hardware Plumbing Dept. Brass Pipe Plugs with 5/8" Hex heads for much easier removal and last forever.

The Square head plugs can be better removed without damage with a EIGHT Point Socket, maybe 7/16" ?

This appears to be another '56 or '57 Engine.

The correct Core Plugs in 1951 to early 1962 V8 Blocks are the Disc. Type which are Convex (Domed OUT) and get perfectly Flat when properly installed with a Seal Driver, or proper sized Socket.
Do NOT Concave a new one, or it will loosen.

A pointed Pin Punch will concave and poke though them easily with a solid hammer blow to the Center, that will loosen it enough to tilt the punch to pull it out.

Use 1 1/2 Inch Dorman Brass replacements, NO Cup Type.

I had the number on the block ran, and it’s from a 56 Commander (not sure which actual car though) so you were right about the year. Thank you for the good info!
