  • Transmission / Overdrive: Trans Needle Bearing Placement

I’m having problems determining where the needle bearings belong on a 3-speed transmission main shaft. Is it on the the very, smalest end or the next larger dimension towards the opposite end? The trans is T-96. The needle bearings are part One Less Stude On the road

Apparently you don't have a manual. Get one. And, if you have no experience rebuilding a standard transmission, take it to a shop that does. Otherwise, you WILL HAVE PROBLEMS.

See exploded view below. When you say "main shaft", you mean the item shown as # 16, right? The roller bearings would ride on the smallest diameter on the front of the shaft, and would be 'inside' of the rear of the input shaft # 4.

However, the p/n 188295 roller bearings you mention are for the larger T86 transmission. The T96 transmission would use p/n 512990 roller bearings.

The first time I disassembled a manual transmission it took a long time. I put every thing is precise order so that I would know how it would go back to gether. It worked fine. Never disassemble some thing and throw all the parts in a pile in a corner ' cause often as not that's where they will stay 'til the end of time. (The second time I did it it didn't take long at all!) The picture isn't very clear at all.

The needles go at number 5 and 18, with a few dots of grease the last needle should snap in. The cluster gear and inside the main shaft.
