  • Engine: How do you remove the ignition points eccentric screw??

Hello All. Hope everyone is well. There is an eccentric screw that is used to help you adjust the points under the distributor cap. It turns back and forth ----but how do you remove it? I want to install electronic ignition and the unit will not go in unless this is removed. Thanks BassMan

Is this a Early Delco, Late Delco Window or Prestolite/Autolite Dist. ?

Either way it was not designed to remove, so you will probably have to destroy the threads in the Breaker Plate or the Screw and Force it out, it is self locking.

I don't recall this ever happening with a Pertronix conversion, are you Sure you are installing it in the Correct location?
What Part Number is the Pertronix Kit?

The screw is not removeable and that is for a reason. If you can't install an electronic ignition module, either you have the wrong part for your distributor or you are trying to install the module in the wrong location. Are you working on an early Delco or Autolite distributor? Bud

Let me take another look at this to see if I am missing something. For some reason I thought it was an Autolite but after another look it is in fact a Delco Remy out of my 289 engine. The electronic unit that I am trying to install is a Pertronix 1187LS. I will take another look and report back right now---
about 8pm ohio time. Thanks BassMan

Reporting back---Well , I took another look and sure enough I had my head up my butt. I see how it is suppose to go in, but I'm not out of the woods yet. I will have to take a file and clear one edge by about .020 of an inch. I have no idea why it is barely off like that. There is a cutout on one end that is meant to clear an edge over by the vacuum advance that just barely hits. No matter how I move the eccentric. I will try and verify the 1187LS number ( unless any of you guys know ). Best Regards

To StudeRich----I found an earlier post ( I think in 2019 ) where you verified the 1187LS number for a 1957 Silver Hawk 289. Thanks---BassMan

That would be correct IF you have the Early Delco, not the Delco with the Metal "Door" to adjust the Points called a "Delco Window".

Your Rotor should look like this:

I had to look that one up StudeRich. Never heard of it but it sounds like a good idea. My distributor cap does not have a window. My rotor does look like the picture you posted, so I should be ok. Thanks again to you and Bud ! BassMan

i bought a Delco window distributor recently to install a Pertronix III module only to find I already had a distributor. Glad I got the one recently though cause I found the breaker plate ground wire was broken & replacing it I think is above my pay grade. I am impressed with the Pertronix III that does away with the "ring" that screws under the rotor. The base has no adjustment so it is easier to install. I did mine on the bench & would not attempt to do it in the car. Even then using a magnetized screwdriver is better. Those are some tiny little buggers!
