  • Exhaust: Heat Riser

    Just an FYI. Often the new heat riser will bind on the new exhaust pipe. This will require some grinding and fitting to be sure that it can move freely. I have had to trim the butterfly and the exhaust pipe to allow it to move freely. Failure to do so will obviousl prevent the valve from opening and cause some real heating issues.

    Yes that is quite common with the new Cadillac replacement Heat Riser Valves, I believe the Original had more internal leakage due to a smaller Butterfly, so never hit the poorly hogged out, out of round Hole in some Exhaust Manifolds or the inside of the Head Pipe.

    The "Muffler Shop" replacement head pipes with a loose Flange slid over a flanged Pipe are more of a problem than factory Welded ones.

      LOL..............I removed the heat riser on my Avanti, and replaced it with a simple spacer obtained from Jon Myer. The car is never driven in the winter.

        Yes, I had to grind my butterfly down quite a bit to avoid hitting multiple places. Now last week it was stuck so I could hardly move it during my first “20min cam run-in”. I removed it thinking it was still too close and expanded when hot or something to bind, but plenty of clearance. I think it was mostly “open” , I forced it with a screwdriver thinking it was stuck SHUT (my exhaust manifold and pipe were red-hot), so not positive. It is pretty cool to hold it in front of a torpedo kerosene heater and watch the valve open; happens pretty quick! (So THAT works). Not impressive is turning the butterfly back and forth and seeing the obvious run-out of the shaft. 4” long and they can’t make it straight in China? Sigh. Hoping it drops completely open before it seizes up, being in Minnesota. Otherwise I’ll cut the valve out and make a ‘spacer’ out of it too, before installing it with the new gaskets….

          I don’t know if they have any more of them, but I was lucky to get a set from Stephan Allen a couple of years ago. My old set has one broken stud and needs planing but likely reusable, if you can’t find a good set.

            Removing the darn thing seems like such a good idea especially here where the old cars are put up in Oct or Nov and don't get out again 'til Apr ore May. What ain't there cannot malfunction!

                As Rich said, more often a problem with shop-crafted poorly trimmed exhaust pipes or after-market heat riser valves.
