  • Engine: Do you have to jack up the engine to remove oil pan?

Hope everyone is well---A quick question: Do you have to jack up the engine to remove the oil pan on a 1957 Studebaker Silver Hawk 289 ? I do not have to do this now, but I'm just curious if you ever need to replace oil pan gasket and/or service rear 2 piece seal. I have read thru many earlier post about doing this in or out of the car, but did not see where anyone said they had to raise the motor to do it. I'm not sure if the pan will hit the frame crossover when you try and remove it. Thanks to all---BassMan--------PS -I finally started my engine on the stand. I will post in the near future about what happened.

Nope, not necessary, at least for V8, but you need to turn the front wheels all the way left or right, to position the "octopus" for best clearance. Also, if you first rotate the crank 180 degrees past TDC, it will locate the crank "throw" (counterweight) at the top, which provides much more clearance when scooting the oil pan rearward the first few inches, before dropping it further down and out. Most folks don't know this because they mistakenly believe it's all but impossible to remove the pan with the motor in the car. I have removed and replaced Stude V8 oil pans, with motor in the car, more times than I can count, and never had a problem (knock wood).

All I had to do on the Golden Hawk was drop the starter. Actually I just set it over on the exhaust pipe. And a Joe say turn the wheels.

Has anyone had any luck removing an R1/R2 oil pan from the engine while still mounted in the car?

Yes I did it a few months ago on 63 R-2 Lark , But truth be told I was also doing a front end rebuild so the Bell crank and tie rods were removed , But I always remove the bell crank and center pin , I don't remove the tie rods from the bell crank . It make the job a lot easier Ed
