  • Engine: FRAM vs WIX oil filter

Could not find the thread that delved into whether the FRAM vs WIX oil filter is prefered. The following info was gathered from the manufacturer's site data.

FRAM PH11 (long) 5.106" high x 3.813" dia., Cellulose/Synthetic blend filter media, Micron rating 8.000 microns
    FRAM PH25 (short) 4.005" high x 3.781" dia., ( Filter as above)

WIX 51049 (long) 5.178" high x 3.660" dia., Enhanced Cellulose filter media, Microns 21.000
WIX 51258 (short) 4.338" high x 3.660" dia., (Filter as above)

Which is "better" ? You can decide for yourself.

Fram is the absolute worst. Wix is the best. Available at Napa or Rock Auto.

The Napa brand filter is also made by Wix. From, what I've seen yes the Fram is not as good as most other filters for cars. But, it may be the best available for a Harley. It's identical to the original equiptment Harley filter from 40 years ago, and far superior to the new filters that are available from Harley.

I've been using either Wix or Baldwin filters on my cars for more years than I care to remember. The only filter from Fram I would use is the Fram Ultra as it is a very good filter but not exactly cheap. Bud

When WIX filters were white you could use a permanent marker to write the date/mileage/viscosity. Now that they are black I’m reduced to scratching that info on the bottom.

Sharpie makes permanent markers with silver ink that is great for writing on black painted metal or black plastic. I keep a black Sharpie and a silver Sharpie in my toolbox.

The 8 micron filter (Fram), would catch smaller particles than the 21 micron (Wix), but may plug up and go into bypass sooner. I am also a Wix filter guy.

                Y'all are funny....
Wix has been sold to Mann & Hummel (Germany)..
Fram has been sold twice in the last ten years (now owned by First Brands)
Champion Laboratories also went with the Fram deal to First Brands.
First Brands is a decent company (formerly Trico).
All these filter companies private label for each other...
NOBODY makes all their own filters.
Brand loyalty should always be product based.
That's all I'll say on the subject...

Good point. Flow will go down as media pores clog over time. Air/fuel/oil..

I question oil filters in any discussion. A former Phillips petroleum engineer once told me the biggest problem with oil management is "water" in the oil, not debris. And that was in 1972. A filter may not attend to this. I tend to agree with the brand loyalty comment. How about the engines that had (have) no filters ? Is there accurate science showing they fail significantly earlier than filtered engines? If so, how much earlier ? Now what about our driving habits nationwide and oil (today's oil) changes ?? My bet is on "overkill" for most engines on this forum. Oil dumped and wasted by anal old car owners rather than reformulated, recycled and re-purposed. I happen to prefer NAPA for most of my stuff mostly due the friendlier staff and my history with them (i.e. discounts and extra effort). So I end up with their product lines most of the time. So I guess I end up with a Wix or something NAPA

There is a lot of truth in the "loyalty" question -Are we loyal to brands, that shift in ownership? Or, are we loyal to the people behind the counter? Or, are we loyal to the basis of our economy, the US Dollar, where "cheapest" wins?

Choices, choices and more conflicting choices.

All good and valid responses. I worked for several of these filter companies for more than a decade. When you make a million plus filters a day...and still don't make them all.... And the consumer feedback is not technical (in an engineering sense), but is brand marketing (both positive and negative)... You do tend to roll your eyes when the subject comes up.

Thought Wix was the better filter. Then a few days ago my son and I went to fill up the '62. Gas station is 10 miles away. On the way back noticed oil blowing out from under the hood. Found the new Wix filter to be leaking. Dan is so right. Our John Deere is made in Japan , our Impala was made in Canada, and our Dodge truck is a Fiat!!

That could just be a Loose Filter or a warped base.

Must be an early '62 with a Partial Flow Spin-On Filter.
