    I have a strange situation with my 62 Hawk, 289 high flow. Any oil capacity number I have seen for the 289 is for 5 quarts. If I fill the oil filter before installation and then fill the crankcase with a total of 5 quarts of oil, including what I put in the filter, the dip stick reads that it is a 1/2 quart low. I have a second dipstick and it shows even lower, closer to 3/4 of a quart.

    Does the 5 quarts include what is in the filter or no? I am wondering if when the engine was rebuilt by the previous owner that the wrong dip stick tube was used resulting in the dipstick sitting too far out, therefore indicating low oil?

    Up until this year I was filling it with oil until the dipstick showed full not realizing that 6 quarts was too much oil, or is it?

    I have the same issue with my 63 Hawk. On my last long trip, I checked the oil and it showed a quart low. I added a quart and drove on. I changed the oil when I returned home and added 5 quarts of oil. It shows a quart low.

      It's five quarts PLUS filter. I've found 5 3/4 quarts with a "large" filter, less with the "short" filters.... on a full flow engine filter. As I remember, the partial flow oil filter engine I had before took a bit more to fill to the line. Un

        It is six quarts including the filter; but the filter itself does not hold a quart.
        Filling the filter before installation is not necessary, nor is doing so undesirable.
        With five in the crankcase, run the engine for a minute, to verify you have oil pressure and no leaks (haven't failed to tighten the drain plug).
        Then shut it off and give a minute to drain down; check the dipstick and bring it up to level.

        Many modern cars, particularly European performance models, are not as forgiving as our Studebakers.
        They may call for 5.3 liters, 7.8 liters or whatever and, if you fudge that up or down by a couple tenths of a liter, or use a slightly off spec oil, could void the engine warranty. In our shop we stock at least six different spec oils in any given viscosity. It has gotten incredibly nuts.

            OK. good to know I wasn't overfilling it then. I'm using an oil called CAM (Classic Auto Motor Oil) It is formulated for older engines with ZDDT etc.. I'll run it up to temp again and top off the oil. Thanks for the great advice. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't over filling it!
