  • Body / Glass: Dodge tailgate for 62 Champ?

Since Studebaker used Dodge beds on Champs, would a 58 - 60 Dodge tailgate bolt right in? I have not found a source of Studebaker 55" tail gates.

Those step side gates are reproduced unless NLA. Its the fleetside (Dodge) & later gates that are rusty buggers and hard to find....No fleetside beds on Stude truck pre- 59 ?

I guess that was a Question, so here is the answer; Mid Year 1961 but mostly '62 to '64 Champs had the P2 "Styleside", Wide, (Dodge similar) Bed available and Standard on '62 and on.

Of Course 1959 Studebaker Deluxes and '56-'58Transtars Were "C" Cabs, so no P2 Boxes.

I did not need the history of Champ pickup beds though some might. I specifically said I have a 62 Champ in the title and I was asking about whether 55" Dodge tailgates from 58 to 60 will fit.

But isn't the forum supposed to be there to help members by answering their specific questions?

Yes, the Tech section is intended to help. Perhaps nobody currently visiting the forum knows for certain, though to me it would seem very likely that the tailgates would interchange as I can think of no reason for Studebaker to re-engineer that portion of the bed.
As for the fleetside Dodge tailgate, have you found a supplier for them? I assume that the Dodge fleetside and stepside bed tailgates are different... can anybody confirm?
A few years ago there was a company in Iowa making reproduction tailgates for the Champ, but I believe they quit offering them. I will see if I can get an update from them.

Have noticed this at times in the past: sometimes no one (or at least, no one on this forum) knows the answer to a specific question.

Like Milaca, I assume that the Dodge tail gate would fit, but have no personal knowledge -- so didn't respond.

I did an extensive search yesterday. I found new reproduction P1 tailgates but nothing new for the P2, Dodge tailgate. I did see enough pictures of the gates on old Dodges to be confident that the P2 gate is identical to the one on 1960 Dodge Sweptline pickups. Many new replacement Dodge tailgates are available for the array of Dodge models, but I could not find one to match the 60 Sweptline aka P2.

OK...trying to be attentive to your request...Here is a link to an eBay store that offers all kinds of reproduction vintage truck bed parts including tailgates. http://www.ebay.com/usr/cstreet_supply

Searching thier "items for sale," shows that they produce parts for Chevy, Ford, and Dodge trucks. While some of them are stamped with logos, others are not. If you are willing to pay for the service, I would suggest contacting them and see if you can get them to custom make you the one you need going of the dimensions you provide to them.

One thing that strikes me about finding a used Dodge tailgate...I think I have seen more of those type beds on T-Cab Studebakers instead of Dodge's of the era. In fact, I can't recall the last time I've seen a Dodge truck that old on the road?

This may be what you are looking for, but call them to check dimensions:

CStreet_Supply makes two 1960 Dodge tailgates, both for stepside (Utiline) models, but not for the Sweptline model which is the same as our P2.

Shown is a 1960 Dodge with Sweptline bed. It appears that the tailgate is identical to the Champ tailgate (other than lettering of course). Is there so little demand for these that nobody makes them for either Dodge or Studebaker?

I emailed DCMClassics. Same story, they have gates for other Dodges but not the one I need. You would think there would be demand. Dodge or Stude they rust like Hell but apparently nobody makes them.
