I have a dist. # ibs 4012-a8t it has duel points.. A 1958 hawk ???? Also what year did studebaker switch over to 12 volt system ??

IBS 4012 is a Prestolite distributor. If it has dual points, it came from an Avanti. Studebaker went to 12 volts in 1956
    64 GT Hawk (K7)
    1970 Avanti (R3)

The Prestolite IBS4012 distributor is used in 63-64 R or JT engines, not the supercharged RS or JTS engines. They will work in stock 259 or 289 applications, but the centrifugal advance is 4 degrees less than the stock non R or JT engine. The total centrifugal advance for the IBS 4012 distributor is 20 degrees at 2400 rpm where the stock distributors are 24 degrees at 2400 rpm. Bud

You're welcome. I use the IBS4012 distributors in both my 62 Hawk and 63 Avanti. If you plan on using one, I strongly recommend having it rebuilt with upgraded parts such as the centrifugal advance weights being replaced with weights using a bronze bushing in the pivot holes which ends the wear problems of the original parts. Also it wouldn't hurt to replace the shaft bushings as they wear to causing shaft wobble which effects both the point dwell and ignition timing. It's my opinion that when a Prestolite dual point distributor is properly rebuilt, they are a much better part than the Delco window distributor. Bud
